Gray Sentenced to 7 to 14 Years in Prison

Former Salem Planning Board member was convicted of a sexual assault charge earlier this year.

The Eagle-Tribune reports former Salem Planning Board member Jeffrey Gray was sentenced to seven to 14 years in state prison Wednesday after he was convicted of rape and assault charges against a New York woman at his Windham home in March 2011.

Gray, 50, was convicted after . Gray was found guilty of one count of aggravated felonious sexual assault and one count of simple assault but not guilty on six other aggravated felonious sexual assault counts and a kidnapping charge.

Gray responded to the woman's ad looking for a place to live on Craigslist. He took the woman in and after three days the woman alleged Gray raped and held her against her will. The next morning he drove her to Logan Airport for her to return to New York, at which point she reported what she said happened to authorities.

Gray admitted to having sex with the woman but claimed it was consensual. The woman said it wasn't, and the rapes involved "mommy and baby" role-playing.

, who asked not to be identified. She said the one aggravated felonious sexual assault charge for which Gray was convicted took place in the upstairs bedroom of his home and involved the threat of physical force, but not actual physical violence.

Physical evidence recovered from his home included duct tape (which wasn't actually used), used and unused adult diapers and urine-stained bed sheets and a blanket.

Other than that, the juror said there wasn't enough evidence to convict Gray. The juror's understanding was because Gray had told police the sex was consensual, some evidence was not admissable at trial.

Gray was removed from the Salem Planning Board after his arrest because he did not provide evidence he resided in Salem. He has been in jail on cash bail since his arrest.
