Detours at Major Salem Junction as Crews Fix Water Main Break

Salem Police list detours and traffic impacts as holiday weekend begins. DPW working to fix major water main break.

Motorists should prepare for longer detours around the intersection of Routes 28 and 97 due to the major water main break early Friday morning.

The Salem Department of Public Works reports it is a significant break and, as a result, it will have as serious impact on local traffic through Friday night.

The Salem Police Department has detoured traffic around the area and are warning all commuters to avoid the area, unless it is absolutely necessary to travel there.

Detours in place at least until midnight on Friday, May 23, and possibly longer, according to Salem Police:

  • Main St (Route 97) west bound is detoured at Granite Avenue and there is a hard closure at Millville Street. To our knowledge all businesses remain open at this time.
  • Main St (Route 97) east bound is closed at Pleasant Street.  Vehicles may travel down Pleasant Street, or the road behind the Tuscan Market which connects to Willow Street.
  • Route 28, north and south, will be down to one lane traffic. Both lanes of travel will be diverted to the northbound lanes. Vehicles will not be allowed to make a left turn on to Main Street from either direction.
