High-Speed Chase Suspect Was Tasered

Anthony Monbleau, 22, was charged with assaulting a police officer and reckless endangerment.

A Rochester man who lead Salem Police on a high-speed chase early Sunday morning and struck one officer and several cruisers was tasered and later held on $75,000 cash bail.

Anthony Monbleau, 23, of Rochester allegedly led police on the chase just after 6 p.m. on Saturday night, according to Deputy Salem Police Chief Shawn Patten.

Police first made contact with Monbleau when they tried to stop him on Route 28 for a motor vehicle infraction, according to Patten. Police pursued the vehicle and learned it had just been reported stolen from the Heavenly Donuts parking lot. Police then broke off the chase due to the escalating reckless nature.

Monbleau was spotted again a short time later on North Policy Street and was operating the car erratically, forcing other vehicles off the road, Patten said. One Salem Police officer narrowly jumped out of Monbleau's way while trying to set up stop sticks.

The chase resumed on Route 28 northbound and ended up in the Heavenly Donuts parking area where several police cruisers surrounded the suspect, Patten said. Monbleau then attempted to escape by ramming his car into some of the police cruisers. Another police cruiser successfully pinned Monbleau's vehicle against a pole. When Monbleau refused to be taken into custody and fought with police, Patten said the suspect was tasered. One police officer who suffered cuts and minor injuries and treated and released from Parkway Medical Center, according to Patten.

Monbleau was charged with: Reckless Conduct (FEL 2 counts), resisting arrest, theft by unauthorized taking, disobeying a police officer, driving after revocation, possession of a controlled drug (heroin) and transportation of a controlled drug (heroin), according to Patten.
