Salem Man Tasered After Stabbing Police Officer

Police arrested a local man Tuesday after the man became violent during a traffic stop and used his keys to stab one of the officers in the hand.

Police arrested a local man Tuesday after the man became violent during a traffic stop and used his keys to stab one of the officers in the hand.

Randy Brown, 47, was charged with two counts of simple assault with bodily injury, resisting arrest, driving after revocation and other motor vehicle infractions following a traffic stop near 109 South Broadway around 9:05 p.m., according to Salem Deputy Police Chief Shawn Patten.

Patten said police stopped Brown for reckless driving, and Brown allegedly told the officer who stopped him that his license was revoked for driving while intoxicated. The officer confirmed Brown's license status and asked the man to exit his vehicle, although Brown allegedly refused, according to Patten.

Another officer arrived on scene, and together the two officers reached into the vehicle to remove Brown after they were unable to convince the man to exit his vehicle.

Patten said that's when Brown, listed at 6-feet, 4-inches tall and weighing 240 pounds, "began actively fighting the officers," continuing to try to and stab and punch both officers after successfully stabbing one of them in the hand with his keys.

Officers used a Taser to subdue Brown, who allegedly remained "combative and repeatedly spat at the officers" after he was taken into custody, according to Patten.

Brown refused bail and was transported the Rockingham County House of Corrections.

The officers were treated on the scene for cuts and scrapes, and the officer stabbed in the hand required medical attention and a tetanus shot at a local hospital.
