Froyo World Coming to North Broadway Plaza

The regional chain is on its way to Salem.

The Salem Planning Board unanimously approved a plan for a Froyo World shop in a plaza on North Broadway.

The business will be located in the same area as Circle K and Pentucket Bank. A plaza on the site, known as the North Broadway Crossing, will hold the new shop.

The frozen yogurt lounge has been a possible design, with similar models cropping up in communities under various names. Patrons get to choose their own portions, flavors and toppings.

Previously located unit was a 1,500-square-foot fitness center, according to Froyo World President Richard Caesar. The frozen yogurt store will be a 2,700-square-foot facility.

Caesar said that the last time the site was before Salem planners was in the fall of 2008 for another unit proposal.

In requesting a parking conditional use permit, Caesar said that the adjacent use of the building compliments Froyo World perfectly. The bank is not open at nights or on weekends and Maddie's Bagel & Eatery at Unit C doesn't operate past 2 p.m.

Caesar said that the majority of the sales at both his Durham, N.H. and Hamden, CT stores are made between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m.

Since the location is changing from retail to restaurant, a $2,685 impact fee will also be assessed, paid prior to occupancy.

A total of 376 parking spaces are required, but the conditional use allows for there to be 360.

A representative of the retail plaza also sent a letter to Planning Director Ross Moldoff giving permission for Froyo World to file a site plan application and conditional use permit.
