Fundraiser to Take Place Tonight for Salem Fire Captain

A fundraiser is currently underway with another to come in June.

The Salem Fire Department is holding two fundraisers in support of a colleague battling a form of Stage 3 cancer, diagnosed in his digestive tract in 2009.

Local firefighters are currently selling $20 T-shirts in support of Capt. Steve McKenna, who has worked in New Hampshire fire service for almost 20 years.

According to a flyer for the shirts, McKenna is a husband and father of two, and has been dealt a poor prognosis.

In a WMUR special report earlier this month, McKenna told the station that he has "maybe a year, at best" to live given the manner in which the disease is spreading to his vital organs.

In an effort to help McKenna and his family, Salem firefighters are also hosting an event at the Radisson/Center of New Hampshire in Manchester on Saturday night.

The event will run from 6 p.m. to 12 a.m. and tickets, like the shirts, are $20 each.

Shirts, helmet stickers, bumper stickers and wrist bands will also be sold at the event, along with raffles and a cash bar.

McKenna's experience as a firefighter includes active roles as a firefighter, officer, NH Fire Academy instructor and member of FEMA MA-TF1.
