The Truth About Benghazi is Unforgiveable

Columnist says the father of Navy Seal Tyrone Woods deserves answers.

People who were on the ground, present at the U.S. Consulate in Libya and at the CIA Annex about a mile away, are talking to Jennifer Griffin, one of the most well-respected reporters at the Pentagon, about what happened on the night of September 11th, and it is worse than any of us could have imagined. The CIA operatives on the ground asked for help – three times – and three times they were denied. The attack that began at about 9:40 p.m. at the Consulate was recorded and transmitted real time back to Washington where it was available at CIA headquarters, the Pentagon and the White House Situation Room. Tyrone Woods, former Navy Seal and a member of the small team at the CIA Annex, eventually ignored orders to “stand down” and joined two …

OP/ED: Vote 'Yes' on Question 1

AFP-NH Director Corey Lewandowski wrote to Patch.

By AFP-NH Director Corey Lewandowski Two weeks from today, NH voters will have the opportunity to ban a state income tax by voting Yes on the proposed constitutional amendment, Question 1. Amending the constitution is an arduous process that should be approached thoughtfully and rarely.  The system is designed to ensure this is the case. First, both bodies of the legislature must approve a proposed constitutional amendment with a 60% majority to place the issue on the ballot. Then the responsibility turns, as it should, to the voters, 2/3rds of whom must approve the question for the constitution to be amended.  This November 6, it is the voters’ responsibility to decide if they want to change the constitution so that our state remains free…

Taking A Closer Look at Question 1

The ballot question would amend the state Constitution to permanently ban an income tax in New Hampshire.

While most of the attention this election cycle has been focused on the presidential race and a very close gubernatorial contest, you may be interested to know that there will also be three ballot questions for voters to consider when they enter the voting booth. One in particular, Question 1, addresses an issue that has long shaped New Hampshire politics. Ballot Question 1 would amend our state Constitution to permanently ban an income tax in the Granite State. This question has garnered the interest and support of many, including former New Hampshire governors Steve Merrill, John Sununu, and Craig Benson, and the national grassroots organization Americans For Limited Government, who all see an opportunity to spread the message of the New…

@Tammy: My definition of poor is someone who makes $30 or under. Today that is subsistence level. And yes you can own property and still be poor and pay income and property tax... I'm not talking about being able to go to college (pell grants). My parents were 'poor' and never qualified for that. And most other stuff is very minimal. For example a veterans exemption on your property taxes is a …   more ›

OP/ED: Romney/Ryan Could Privatize Social Security

Social Security is not an investment program; it's social insurance plan.

By Stephen Gorin It is no secret that U.S. Paul Ryan, R-WI, has spent much of his Congressional career seeking to undermine Social Security.  In 2005, Ryan and then-U.S. Sen. John Sununu introduced a partial privatization proposal that was so extreme the Bush Administration, then in the midst of developing its own proposal, described it as a “bad idea.”  To create the private accounts, Ryan and Sununu would have taken funds from Social Security, which would have required the government to borrow $2.4 trillion during the plan’s first decade alone. According to the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities, over 75 years, this would have required the transfer of $8.5 trillion from the rest of the government’s budget. Ironically, in 2005, only…

Let's Be Clear About Benghazi

Columnist takes President Obama to task for his comments in Tuesday's debate.

The President is fond of using the phrase “Let me be perfectly clear.” I have learned over the years that this is often a signal that he is about to be anything but perfectly clear.  I wasn’t originally going to address Tuesday night’s debate, but the President told a blatant falsehood when he said he referred to the attacks in Libya as terrorist attacks in his Rose Garden remarks the next day. He did not. He used the word “terror” in reference to the 9-11-2001 attacks. He and his administration blamed a stupid YouTube video for 14 days before finally acknowledging the attacks were a coordinated, preplanned terrorist attack. Press Secretary Jay Carney 9/14 - “We don’t have and did not have concrete evidence To suggest that this was not in …

OP/ED: Obama Building an Economy Where the Middle Class Grows

He has helped support tens of thousands of women.

By Joyce Craig As Jennifer Horn knows, women are, in fact, intelligent and tuned into the economy. That’s why we know that when President Barack Obama took office, our economy was losing 750,000 jobs per month, our financial sector was in crisis, our housing sector was plummeting and the auto industry was on the brink of collapse. And rather than blindly swallowing the kind of specious arguments presented by Horn, both men and women across this state know that the president has worked consistently to correct this course and build an economy that’s meant to last.  The president's record speaks for itself. His administration has helped support tens of thousands of women, from workers to researchers to small business owners. The American …

What A Tangled Web We Weave

Columnist says the VP debate showed the stark differences between Joe Biden and Paul Ryan.

No one expected last night’s debate to be a decision-maker for voters. Traditionally the Vice Presidential debate has never had that kind of influence in a presidential race; after all, we vote for president, not vice president. Both candidates showed strength last night: Joe Biden remained true to his bulldog character and Paul Ryan did not disappoint those who know him to be one of the most intelligent, experienced, well-informed members of Congress.  We also saw some stark differences between these two men. The Vice President was rude, condescending, smirking and bizarre in his reactions (seriously, the laughing was just too odd) and Rep. Ryan was consistently calm, polite and, for my taste, almost too deferential, while remaining on …

The most glaring omission in the Boehner-McConnell spin of how Romney can work “across the aisle” with the congress because he has proven he can work “across the aisle” with Democrats when he was governor of Massachusetts is that there was no “aisle” to work across in Massachusetts when Romney was governor. HIS LEGISLATURE WAS 87% DEMOCRATIC! The Boehner – McConnell myth that Romney can work “…   more ›

A Big Choice

Columnist says last week's debate redefined the presidential race.

It’s a big choice. On Nov. 6, Americans are going to make a choice about the future of our country. They are going to choose not just the individual who will lead us toward tomorrow, but the direction we will take as well. It is a choice that, for some, is only now coming into focus. Last week’s debate between the President of the United States and the man who would like to replace him brought perhaps the greatest clarity yet as to the differences between these two men and the differences between their visions for America. Most political pundits predicted the exchange would have little impact on the trajectory of the race. They were wrong. That debate not only defined both the candidates and their plans, it completely redefined the race …

OP/ED: Time for Restoring Fiscal Responsibility is Now

The national debt is rising, and Americans For Prosperity believes it's time to address it.

By AFP-NH Director Corey Lewandowski The current national debt is now over $16 trillion – that’s $16,000,000,000,000.  That means that every man, woman and child in this country currently owes approximately $51,874 on the debt and every family of four’s share of the national debt has surpassed $207,000. In January 2009 when President Obama took office the amount each individual owed was $34,420.  Under President Obama as the national debt has increased by more than $4 trillion, each individual’s share has also increased by $17,454. Chief Justice John Marshall wrote, “An unlimited power to tax involves, necessarily, a power to destroy; because there is a limit beyond which no institution and no property can bear taxation.” His words ring …

A Mother's Strength

Columnist writes about one of the great teachers in her life – her mom.

Two years ago, my mother had a stroke. I don’t want to call it “massive” – that seems overly dramatic – but it was a major stroke. According to her doctors, it affected 20 percent of her brain, and two years later she is still living with the consequences. We discovered that the problem was really with her heart, which led to the stroke. The first two months were horrible. My parents are well into their seventies and we all understand that no one lives forever, but this was like having death knock at your door and then change its mind at the last minute. As bad as the physical effects were – she couldn’t speak coherently, couldn’t read, couldn’t process what was going on around her, could not articulate her thoughts – the worst part was …
