U.S. Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) and RNC Chairman Reince Priebus, gave rousing speeches, moving from poignant, thoughtful strategy sharing to passion filled indictments of the Obama presidency that they suggested was violating the Constitution and harming the future of the country. An anonymous accusation was made last week in the Salem Community Patriot.
Town Manager Keith Hickey said an anonymous accusation that he and town staff inappropriately awarded the bid for renovations to the lower level of town hall is “blatantly untrue” and “completely baseless.” In the May 17th “Thumbs Up? Thumbs Down?” column of the Salem Community Patriot, an anonymous complainant alleges the town’s finance director awarded a project to renovate the former Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) space at the Town Hall Offices to a company that employs her husband. “All I have is my integrity,” Hickey said. “I’m not going to screw up a $40,000 project. It’s just not going to happen.” Hickey told the board he followed proper procedure and that purchasing policy does not restrict the town from utilizing the services …
The board voted 4-1 Monday to begin the process.
The Board of Selectmen launched the town’s search for an assistant town manager with a 4-1 vote Monday evening. Selectman Stephen Campbell voted against commencing the process of hiring an assistant town manager, who would also assume in some capacity the responsibilities of the community affairs director. Of greatest concern to Campbell was Human Resource Director Molly McKean’s suggestion that the board and town remain flexible with the salary range advertised for the position. “We may cut our applicant pool in half if we advertise a salary range and aren’t flexible,” McKean said, noting the town’s perfect candidate for the hybrid position may require a higher salary than advertised. “I’d like to have flexibility to negotiate the salary…

Union officials and state representatives who are firefighters urge passage of SB 152.
The Professional Fire Fighters of New Hampshire union came out in favor of a casino gambling proposal earlier today that faces a contentious floor fight in the House on Wednesday. Union President David Lang, as well as a number of firefighters, some who are also state representatives, said they were backing the measure because revenue from the proposal was badly needed to pay for public safety, health services, and infrastructure. Lang said the money from a casino was needed to fund "an effective, efficient government" in the state. "We hear in this building and the one across the street that public safety is a priority," he said at a news conference at the Legislative Office Building in Concord. "Let me suggest to you that if you say you…

Legislative Week: House votes on casino gambling bill. Senate to vote on medical marijuana, proposed gas tax increase, and repeal of the 'stand your ground' law.
Medical marijuana, casino gambling, "stand your ground" and the gas tax face critical votes in the New Hampshire House and Senate this week. The House convenes in regular session at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 22. The Senate meets in session at 10 a.m. Thursday. Casino vote looms. Will the House reject the bill to legalize casino gambling in New Hampshire? Or will its independent-minded members overturn a committee report recommending the bill be killed? We'll know come Wednesday, but you can be sure the vote wrangling is on high. Mary Jane Wallner (D-Concord), the chairwoman of the House "special committee" that voted 23-22 last week to recommend the House kill the bill, writes in the committee report that the bill "short circuits the …

Last week, a House super committee voted to recommend the bill "inexpedient to legislate."
A massive expanded gambling bill that if passed could bring a $600 million casino project to Rockingham Park will be voted on this week in the New Hampshire House of Representatives. Senate Bill 152 is expected to be on the House calendar for this Wednesday. The session begins at 10 a.m in Concord. Last week, a joint House Committee of Finance/Ways and Means voted 23-22 to recommend SB 152 "inexpedient to legislate." The narrow vote came following a motion from Rep. Patricia Lovejoy (D-Stratham). A total of 17 amendments were presented earlier that morning, but none were voted on as the ITL motion was taken up first. Despite the recommendation, Gov. Maggie Hassan (D-NH), released a statement where she remained optimistic as the bill heads …

I agree with the Town Manager's decision. There was no fraud nor any attempt to hide this. He could have brought it up at a Selectman's but he didn't. Maybe that is something he will do in the future as Selectman Campbell pointed out. The wide spread perception is that too much town business is conducted in secret. Procedures are to help people do their jobs. I would rather he not always do …   more ›
