NH House Kills Casino Bill

The final vote was 173-144.

The New Hampshire House of Representatives voted 173-144 on Thursday to kill a bill that would have allowed one, high-end casino in the state.

Gov. Maggie Hassan had lobbied hard for the bill, saying if the Granite State didn't build a casino it would be giving away $75 million a year to Massachusetts and Maine. She reiterated that concern in a statement released following Thursday's House vote.

"Despite today’s vote, I continue to believe that developing our own plan for one high-end casino is the best course of action for investing in the priorities that are critical to long-term economic growth," Hassan said. "Soon, we will all see the impact of Massachusetts casinos right across our border in the form of lost revenue and potential social costs. One way or another, we will need to recognize what is happening around us and take action to protect the interests of New Hampshire’s people and economy."

Rockingham Park in Salem has consistently been mentioned as a possible site for a casino in New Hampshire.
