Kuster Makes Stop in Salem Tuesday

She met with women business leaders at Southern New Hampshire University.

U.S. Rep. Annie Kuster (D-NH) was in Salem on Tuesday morning.

She made a stop at Southern New Hampshire University's Salem campus, where she met with women business leaders.

Kuster convened a diverse group of female business owners, administrators, and leaders for a roundtable discussion on challenges and opportunities facing women in the workplace. During the discussion, Kuster heard directly from local stakeholders on a variety of issues facing women in the economy, including pay equity, job training, and underrepresentation in corporate leadership, among other concerns.

"Investing in the future of our female entrepreneurs is not only the right thing to do, it also makes good business sense," Kuster said. "Ensuring that female business leaders have the support they need throughout their careers means more jobs for New Hampshire residents and faster economic growth. It’s time we recognize the vital role women play in our economy."

Roundtable participants included representatives from the Greater Salem Chamber of Commerce, the New Hampshire Women’s Initiative, Southern New Hampshire University’s Center for Women’s Business Advancement, and a range of women-owned and operated businesses and organizations from across Southern New Hampshire.

As a member of the United States’ first all-female Congressional delegation, Kuster has worked to level the playing field and create equal opportunities for female professionals and women-owned businesses. She is a cosponsor of the Paycheck Fairness Act, which would increase the effectiveness of remedies available to victims of pay discrimination on the basis of gender. And last year, she joined her colleagues on the bipartisan Congressional Women’s Caucus in urging the U.S. Small Business Administration to work more aggressively to expand federal contracting opportunity for women-run firms.
