$90K for Salem Bike-Ped Trail

The Board of Selectmen holds its regular meeting at 7 p.m. April 28.

The Salem Board of Selectmen will hold a public hearing April 28 for acceptance of a $90,000 donation from the Friends of the Salem Bike/Pedestrian corridor.

The regular meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the Knightly Meeting Room at Salem Town Hall. Here is the agenda. Selectmen are scheduled to meet in a non-public meeting at 5:30 p.m. for consideration of the acquisition, sale or lease of property.

The Salem Bike-Ped Corridor was envisioned in 2003 as part of the widening of Interstate 93.

Here is more on the corridor, via the town's Projects Page:

"The Salem Bike-Ped Corridor along the abandoned Boston and Maine Railroad Manchester to Lawrence Branch will form the primary non-motorized transportation path from the Methuen town line at Hampshire Road to the existing Windham Rail Trail at Route 111. This plan was envisioned and documented in 2003 when plans were made to widen Route 93. Connections to businesses, residential areas, schools, recreation areas, and Park-N-Ride locations will provide economic growth, more convenience, less traffic congestion, higher property values, and promote active lifestyles. The project is a means to provide everyone safe alternatives to motor vehicles along the Route 28 corridor for multi-purpose uses such as walking or cycling to work, school, shopping, and activities that are beyond the typical recreational use."

The Bike Walk Alliance of New Hampshire also has some photos and information about corridor improvements over the past year.
