Suspect 'Bull Rushes' Salem Officer While Being Arrested

Corey Welch was charged with two counts of simple assault on a police officer.

A suspect being arrested following a traffic stop on Route 38 Sunday reportedly charged at one of the Salem officers, according to police.

Corey Welch, 22, of Dracut, Mass. was charged with two counts of simple assault on a police officer, driving after suspension, two counts of resisting arrest, escape, possession of a controlled drug (marijuana) and transportation of drugs (motor vehicle).

According to police, Officer Nick Turner stopped Welch's vehicle near Delaware Drive for motor vehicle infractions.

During the stop, Welch failed to produce identification and gave Turner false information about his identity.

Turner was able to figure out Welch's correct identity and learned that his driver's license was suspended.

While being arrested outside of the vehicle, Welch immediately began resisting, acting very aggressively, according to police.

He was handcuffed after a brief struggle and began resisting again after he was brought to the police cruiser.

After relaxing for a few seconds, Welch reportedly "bull rushed" Turner, knocking him backwards, and then took off running.

Turner chased Welch on Route 38, narrowly being missed by oncoming traffic before tackling him after about 50 yards.

Welch continued to kick and flail until other officers arrived and were able to control him and get him into a cruiser.

Officers found a small amount of marijuana on Welch as well as packets of synthetic marijuana known as "spice' or "Scooby Snax."

Welch was processed and refused bail. He was later transported to jail pending arraigment.
