New York Man Charged with Identity Fraud, Theft

Kofi Baning allegedly posed as another person in order to ship iPads to Ghana.

A New York man was arrested on identify fraud charges on Thursday after he allegedly posed as another person in order to ship iPads to Ghana.

Kofi Baning, 34, of Bronx, NY was charged with theft by deception, identity fraud and fraudulent driver's license. He was held on $25,000 cash bail pending arraignment.

At 1:56 pm. Thursday, Salem Police received a call concerning a potential fraud case involving a delivery to a Salem FedEx office. The victim stated they were contacted about an overnight delivery to be picked up, but the victim hadn’t ordered anything. The shipment was for two iPads valued at more than $1,800.

Police responded to FedEx and took Baning into custody when he showed up to pick up the packages. Baning provided a false Massachusetts driver's license identifying himself as the victim. During questioning, he said that the order was placed by an unknown male in his native country of Ghana.
