Man Beaten Unconscious While Waiting for iPhone Release

Two arrests, thefts, domestic disputes and trespassing issues took place at the Mall at Rockingham Park in the hours before the iPhone 5s and 5c release.

Salem police made two arrests and had to intervene in a variety of incidents in the early morning hours before the new Apple iPhones went on sale Friday at the Mall at Rockingham Park.

Deputy Police Chief Shawn Patten said Mark Young, 24, and Jennifer Young, 22, both of Peabody, Mass., were arrested while police attempted to maintain order in a crowd of about 1,000 people huddled outside the mall, which has an Apple store and has been known for issues during major technology releases in the past.

Mark Young was charged with trespassing and disorderly conduct, while Jennifer Young was charged with trespassing and possession of marijuana, according to Patten, who said both individuals were released on $1,000 personal recognizance bail.

Officers also found a man who was beaten unconscious, and Patten said detectives are still investigating that incident. Patten said the man was found "laying in some brush," although he said in a release that none of the roughly 1,000 people in the area "'witnessed' the assault."

The man was transported to an area hospital by members of the Salem Fire Department.

Patten said there were several other minor incidents over the course of Friday morning, including multiple thefts, domestic disputes and trespassing issues. Officers handled those issues "without incident," according to Patten.

There were no issues at the mall in September 2012 for the release of the iPhone 5. The iPad release in March 2012 had issues similar to those during Friday's release, though, as one man was arrested and numerous others were asked to leave when a crowd waiting in line for the new iPad got out of control.

An estimated crowd of 1,000 people awaiting that iPad release became unruly and caused a crushing issue at the mall entrance doors. At that time, local police said they would work with the mall and Apple to make sure nothing like that would happen again in Salem.

Completely ridiculous! Everyone is selfish and self-centered these days which results in road rage, parents fighting at sports events, and situations like this. Life is too short! Money and price are irrelevant. One should not have to fear to wait in a line for a new product. If you can't handle it, be polite and respectful, then don't go and wait in the line! If someone cuts you, big deal...say your peace, keep calm and let it go...its not worth it. It just says what type of person they are and let's hope karma is real!

No one seems to care. It seems an iPhone is more important than helping anyone! This world is so sick! It wouldn't surprise me if it was someone who took money to buy a phone for someone and decided to keep it. There are a ton of foreigners that pay local kids to stand in line and buy 2 or 3 at a time. How do we know the phones are not being used by terrorists or others not friendly to our country! America...Wake Up!

To me nothing is worth standing in line to deal with those animals. Did anyone even intervene and try to help?? God people just suck these days, and that's the nicest way I can put it. :(

I have no idea as to the political affiliation of the suspects. Nor is it relevant to any motive.

1,000 people and no witnesses. They needed to have at least 1,001 to have a least one person see anything.

And they'll all be back in line in a year and a half doing the SAME thing for the next new iPhone. Simply saddnenning that probably at LEAST 20 people WATCHED that man get beat down, and maybe even robbed, too, and all they were afraid of is if they stepped out of line to help the poor bloke, they'd lose their spot and maybe have to wait a week to get their precious toy. If they've video cameras at that place, they should be pulled for whoever did that and whoever just stood by idly. But, let's not forget that poor bugger that was trampled to death at Walmart on Black Friday. I don't even think there was an arrest made in THAT case, yet. I hope those selfish a$$es can't sleep at night, for seeing that guys face full of terror.

I have to agree with everyone else who needs to stand in line for any phone that is pain stupid its not like there getting a bargain . I think what they pay for them is stupid think what they could do with that money --saving that they could all retire and have millions --pure greed.

I am truly shocked to note that people become so disoriented psychologically and physically just for the sake of a newly released gadget which anyway may become obsolete within a year at the present pace of advancing technology. For that matter, whenever samsung releases a new gadget in India, such a mad rush and hooliganism does not occur . Why eat humble pie just for an APPLE ! ?

Do you have a problem with minorities ? You would probably be right at home with the idiots.

Wait a week, buy on eBay for less money.
Marcus Aurelius September 23, 2013 at 11:00 AM
I am sure Obama can fix this, just make Apple give free phones to the useless welfare rats that already have 3 or 4 Obama phones.
Southpaw September 23, 2013 at 02:00 PM
So, what happened? Did someone feel the need to beat up someone so he/she could take the person's place in line? Really. People are that selfish and sick today. And I agree with a lot of the comments here. People need to get a life for crying out loud. Yes, Rooftop, they could wait and get it on ebay, but you're talking about a bunch of stupid people who don't have the capacity to think...at all.
Liz September 23, 2013 at 06:35 PM
And Black Friday is coming...more people will get trampled by animals rushing into the Walmarts and Best Buys of the country to get that item they'll probably put away somewhere and forget in a few months, or need to replace because it's outdated before the end of the year. Can't wait for that.
