Driver Pulls Gun, Fires Shot at Jogger After Argument

Police have recovered a shell casing, although they're seeking more information about the incident, which included the jogger spitting on the car.

Police are asking the public for help in identifying a driver who pulled a gun on a jogger during a disagreement and "fired a round out of the car at him" before fleeing the area, according to Salem Deputy Police Chief Shawn Patten.

Patten said the jogger was in the area of Shannon Road and Clubhouse Drive around 6:30 p.m. Thursday "when he was involved in a verbal altercation with a motorist at the intersection."

Patten said the motorist allegedly "nudged out of the road" toward the jogger, who "spit on the car after more words were exchanged." The jogger continued past the vehicle, at which point Patten said the motorist pointed a handgun out of the driver-side window and fired at the jogger.

Police recovered a shell casing Friday morning in the area where the incident occurred. The incident is still under investigation.

A potential suspect has been identified based on the vehicle's description and information provided by the jogger, although Patten said police are asking anyone who may have observed the incident to contact the Salem Police Department at 893-1911 or the Southern New Hampshire Crimeline at 893-6600.
