Another Water Main Break in Salem Depot

Police warn drivers to avoid the area if at all possible.

The Salem Police Department reports there is another water main break in the Salem Depot and drivers are urged to avoid the area.

Updates will be forthcoming May 30, according to police, but the department reports that one lane north and southbound will reopen soon. Main Street east and west are closed.

The report comes a week after a major water main break in the same area.

The "depot" is in the area of Routes 28 and 97. The report at 10:30 a.m. from Salem Police:

"The Salem Department of Public Works has indicated this is a significant break and, as a result, there will be a serious impact on the morning and evening commutes. The Salem Police Department has detoured traffic around the area and are warning all commuters to avoid the area, unless it is absolutely necessary to travel there. We are also issuing a warning that there will be lengthy traffic delays in and around the detour area. The entire intersection is being shut down and no traffic will be allowed through."

Salem Police announced traffic detours this morning:

  • Route 28 NB will be directed to Main St east bound.
  • Route 28 SB will be directed to Main St west bound.
  • Main St EB will be detoured at Granite Ave with a hard closure at Millville St.
  • Main St WB will be detoured at Pleasant St.
