Alleged Mall Car Thieves Caught After Foot Chase

A Massachusetts driver started a car and foot chase with police at the Mall at Rockingham Park Wednesday night after police tried to pull his vehicle over because it came back stolen.

Five individuals "bailed out of the car" and attempted to flee on foot after the driver tried to use the vehicle to escape through the mall's parking lot, according to Salem Deputy Police Chief Shawn Patten. Patten said witnesses believe the individuals were trying to break into vehicles in the mall parking lot.

The incident occurred at 6:22 p.m. Wednesday, and Patten said all five suspects were apprehended by police without incident and charged with a variety of crimes.

Elvin Alvarez, 19, of Lowell, Mass., was the driver of the stolen Massachusetts vehicle, and Patten said he was charged with felony receiving stolen property, reckless operation, reckless conduct, possession of a controlled drug (marijuana), transportation of drugs in a motor vehicle, disobeying a police officer, and operating without a valid license.

Chris Martinez-Mendez, 17, of Lowell, Mass., was charged with resisting arrest.

A 16-year-old boy and two 15-year-old boys were also charged with resisting arrest.

Alvarez refused bail and was transported to the Rockingham County House of Corrections. Martinez-Mendez was held on $1,000 personal recognizance bail, and the juveniles were released to parents "pending juvenile petitions to court," according to Patten.
