Funeral Arrangements for Salem Fire Captain Announced

Stephen J. McKenna's wake will be held on Monday and his funeral on Tuesday in Keene.

The funeral arrangements for Salem Fire Capt. Stephen J. McKenna have been finalized and are as follows:  

WAKE: MONDAY, MARCH 24 - 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., Fletcher Funeral Home, 3 Marlboro St., Keene.

There will be a Firefighter Walk-Through at 5 p.m. Firefighters wishing to participate in the Firefighter Walk-Through shall assemble at the Keene State College Outdoor Sports Complex on Krif Road in Keene (off Winchester Street) at 4 p.m. Members will be shuttled from this staging area to the Funeral Home and returned after the wake. Uniform of the day is Class A with cover, white gloves, and mourning badge tab.  

FUNERAL: TUESDAY, MARCH 25 – 11 a.m., St. Bernard’s Church, 173 Main St., Keene.   

Firefighters wishing to attend the funeral shall assemble at the Keene State College Outdoor Sports Complex on Krif Road in Keene (off Winchester Street) at 8:30 a.m. Members will be shuttled to the church, where they will await the procession from the funeral home. Uniform of the day is Class A with cover, white gloves, and mourning badge tab. Following the funeral mass (Liturgy of the Word), members will be shuttled to the Best Western Hotel/Waxy O’Connors on Winchester Street for a firefighter coalition. Shuttle service will also be available back to the Sports Complex. A block of rooms have been reserved at the Best Western Hotel for Monday night and Tuesday night. The direct number is (603) 357-3038. The double-occupancy rate is $76 (plus tax) under “Salem Fire Department.” Rooms are also available at the Marriott Hotel, 75 Railroad St. in Keene. There is no special rate at this time. Honor Guards that are interested in participating in the funeral are welcomed and can obtain further instructions by contacting Firefighter Phil MacCallum at pmaccallum@ci.salem.nh.us.  

In lieu of flowers, a trust account has been established for Steve’s sons’ college education. Donations can be sent to: Service Credit Union, 403 Winchester St., Keene NH 03431, McKenna Children Trust, Account #28402696. Capt. McKenna memorial T-shirts will be available at the coalition. The Salem Fire Department and the McKenna Family are extremely thankful and humbled by the outpouring of support the fire service and the community has displayed over the last 48 hours.
