Sweeney Bets on The House

Gambling's next chapter in NH: Regulatory Oversight Authority meets Aug. 15.

Casino gambling fell short in the New Hampshire House of Representatives two months ago, but Salem Rep. Joe Sweeney thinks another shot at it later this year and next will resolve any thorny concerns of the critics.

Sweeney, in an interview at his fundraiser Friday, took a silver lining from the defeat. The gap was about 30 House members, he noted, and now supporters of a casino can work to alleviate outstanding concerns.

Opponents flagged more than a few during legislative deliberations, including community impacts and regulatory and enforcement structures.

Supporters still have a powerful friend in Gov. Maggie Hassan, who wants a single, highly regulated casino in southern New Hampshire.

The gaming regulatory oversight authority is set to meet next week, at which time the state will get a better idea of where this latest debate is heading.
