13 Salem Restaurants That Opened, Closed in 2013

The year 2013 was a year of plenty of business change in and around Salem, particularly in terms of the places local residents like to get something to eat or drink.

Below are some of the eateries that opened or closed in 2013. Which new restaurant is your favorite, and which were you saddest to see go? Please tell us in the comments.


1. Polcari'sThe popular Italian-American eatery and pizzeria was one of the first business changes of 2013, as the 368 South Broadway restaurant closed its doors in January after opting not to renew its lease.

2. Popeyes
While the news broke in 2012 that the national fried chicken chain would be coming to Salem, the fast food restaurant really started to get its footing in the former KFC building at 481 South Broadway in early 2013.

2. The Green Barn
The 42-year-old Hampstead Road staple closed its doors in March, although longtime fans hope it'll soon reopen elsewhere in town as planned.

3. The Barking Bean Cafe: Relatively-young Salem native Cassie Schofield fulfilled her lifelong goal of owning her own business, opening the 163 Main St. cafe in the spring after stepping away from the career path she was on.

4. Tuscan Market
Tuscan Market and Tuscan Kitchen introduced locals to the Trattoria in 2013, which added a full-service dining area that serves lunch and dinner to the popular company's market.

5. Tuscan Market's expansion
Tuscan Market makes this list twice thanks to the waves it made in June with news that it would expand its brand into Massachusetts through the use of a second location.

6. 
Froyo World: The national frozen yogurt chain opened year at 236 North Broadway in the North Broadway Crossing Plaza.

7. Border Brewery
The self-proclaimed "off the beaten path" shop entered the craft beer industry in July, adding its own brews to shelves that already stocked a variety of favorites from other small beermakers.

8. Dunkin' Donuts
Salem got another taste of the national franchise's donuts and coffee in summer 2013 thanks to a new Dunkin' Donuts location at 227 North Broadway.

9. Dunkin' Donuts
Speaking of Dunkin' Donuts and its continued growth into the local business market, Windham gave the green light for a third location in town in September.

10. 
Orange LeafAnother national frozen yogurt chain got into the Salem scene in 2013, as national soft serve company Orange Leaf announced in September that it will add a local store in 2014.

11. 
Crumbs Bake ShopAmong the many store changes in the Mall at Rockingham Park this year was the birth of Crumbs Bake Shop, a gourmet cupcakery, in the fall.

12. Upscale sports lounge replacing Flaming Kabob
The building at 8 East Broadway that once housed the Flaming Kabob will soon make way for a watering hole owned by an award-winning restauranteur. 

13. Mary Ann's Diner
Among the restaurant changes that came late in the year was the introduction of a second Mary Ann's Diner location in the area, as the business opened a diner in Windham.
