Salem Strangler Nabbed on Friendship Drive

He was apprehended on Thursday.

A New Hampshire man and U.S. Marshal's "Fugitive of the Week" was arrested in Salem this morning at a residence on Friendship Drive.

James Rutledge Chase III, 45, was wanted on outstanding warrants issued by both the Rockingham County Superior Court and the Salem Police Department.

Rockingham County wanted Chase for failing to appear on a probation violation as part of a sentence for second degree assault by strangulation.

Salem Police were seeking Chase on another arrest warrant for assault by strangulation.

The "Fugitive of the Week" is a feature broadcast on WTPL-FM, WMUR-TV, the Union Leader, the Nashua Telegraph and elsewhere on the Internet.

The feature this morning of Chase caused numerous tipsters to lead investigators to the Friendship Drive address.

Chase was arrested and transported to the Salem Police Department, where he was held for processing on the arrest warrants, pending his initial court appearance.

Members of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force assisting in the arrest included – Rockingham and Hillsborough County Sheriff's offices; Salem, Manchester and Greenfield Police; N.H. Probation and Parole; and the deputy U.S. Marshals.

According to the U.S. Marshals "Wanted" poster, Chase also went by the aliases of Shawn Wells, Jim Chase, John Leone and Jesse James.

The Rockingham County warrant was issued on June 13 while the Salem Police warrant was issued on May 24.
