Salem Man Seriously Injured in Motorcycle Crash

A Salem man was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident on Friday night.

At 11:29 p.m., the Salem Police Department and Salem Fire Department responded to a report of a motor vehicle accident with injuries at the intersection of Route 97 and Hampstead Road. Upon arrival, officers located the male operator of a motorcycle suffering from serious bodily injuries.

Upon conducting the initial investigation police said it appears as if a 2000 GMC Savana passenger van, being driven by Peter Muiruri of Haverhill, MA, was traveling east on Main Street and was in the process of making a left hand turn on to Hampstead Road. As Muiruri made the left turn he crossed into the path of a 2006 Honda motorcycle, being operated by Sean Bonneau of Salem, at which time Bonneau collided with the right front corner of the van.

Bonneau suffered serious facial and bodily injuries at the scene. He was transported from the scene to Lawrence General Hospital by the Salem Fire Department. He was then flown to Boston Medical Center by a DART medical helicopter.

At the early stages of this investigation it does appear as if speed is a factor in the collision. It is unclear at this time if drugs or alcohol were also contributing factors.

The accident remains under investigation by the Salem Police Technical Accident Reconstruction Team. Any witnesses to this accident are asked to call Sergeant Tom Kench at 603-893-1911.
