Assault Weapons Ban, Higher Speed Limits and Gambling

New Hampshire lawmakers will debate these and other controversial issues in the upcoming legislative session.

Friday was the deadline for members of the New Hampshire Senate to submit Legislative Service Requests for 2014. The deadline for the House had already passed.

So far, some familiar issues are already cropping up on the list of LSRs. Here's a quick look at a few of them:

  • repealing the death penalty in New Hampshire.
  • relative to distracted driving.
  • prohibiting law enforcement agencies from using a drone to collect evidence.
  • requiring licensing of outpatient abortion facilities.
  • including "fetus" in the definition of "another" for the purpose of certain criminal offenses.
  • relative to the sale of birds.
  • making changes to the therapeutic cannabis laws.
  • permitting qualifying patients and registered caregivers to cultivate cannabis for therapeutic use.
  • establishing up to six gambling establishments in the state and a gaming oversight authority and continually appropriating a special fund.
  • increasing the speed limit on a portion of Route 101 to 70 miles per hour.
  • increasing the speed limit on a portion of I-89 to 70 miles per hour.
  • reducing the rate of tax on meals under the meals and rooms tax.
  • relative to synthetic marijuana.
  • requiring state police to wear a camera when interacting with the public.
  • banning assault weapons and large-capacity ammunition magazines.
