The cost of colonoscopies, MRIs, CT scans and mammograms can shift a lot from county to county.
It costs $1,950 for the average CT scan in Rockingham County — about $800 cheaper than the state average. The average prices of colonoscopies, mammograms, and MRIs in Rockingham County are also all lower than the state average. That's according to data from New Choice Health, a private company that encourages people to become smarter healthcare consumers. The four medical procedures mentioned above, however, are all more expensive in Rockingham County than in Hillsborough County, according to the data. These big regional differences have been in the news lately: As the Washington Post wrote, "One hospital charges $8,000 - another $38,000." Using the same data as the Post, The New York Times listed out the prices of a series of procedures …
Windham Patch spoke with Board of Selectmen Chairman Everett McBride, Jr.
The Board of Selectmen held a goal-setting session this week, but a discussion of a possible assistant town manager position in Salem did not come up in the meeting, according to Chairman Everett McBride, Jr. McBride said that he expects further discussions on the matter to next come up during the board's May 20 meeting. He didn't say if any talks will take place during the next Board of Selectmen meeting on May 13. The possibility of an assistant town manager was first raised on Monday as the town is trying to find a solution following the announced departure of Community Development Director William Scott, who will be taking a pay cut of $22,620 to head to Amesbury, Mass. He will remain in Salem until June 24. Under the assistant town …
House panel eyeing changes in regulation, licensing and revenue distribution. Vote set for May 15.
A slew of casino bill amendments may soon be floated after House subcommittees delivered reports Thursday that raised questions and new ideas about regulation, licensing and oversight. Suggestions included expanding those requiring background checks, additional criteria for licensure, enhancing authority for the New Hampshire Attorney General, tightening limits on political contributions, and reworking the revenue distribution formula. Revenue subcommittee Chairman Neal Kurk (R-Weare) reported the timeline for a casino licensing review could be pushed back by another 11 months. That includes nine months for regulatory review and submissions of requests for proposals, and two months for background checks. "We believe that if everything …

Bill Wortman, co-CEO for the Las Vegas-based company, joined the project architect for a town hall forum Wednesday.
Interest for a casino in Salem has reached a fever pitch, as evidenced by the nearly 250 people who squeezed into the Belmont Room of Rockingham Park Wednesday to take a peek at what the facility could one day look like. Easels lined the front of the room displaying updated casino renderings. The project, which would be backed by Millennium Gaming of Las Vegas, is now north of $600 million. The total investment is up over $150 million from the designs presented in February. The new renderings include a convention center, resort hotel with spa and parking garages. Millennium Gaming owns the option to purchase Rockingham Park should Senate Bill 152 pass the state legislature and a casino bid be awarded to the facility. SB 152 proposes up to …

He said that a total of five legislators are undecided on the 45-member committee.
A Salem representative is predicting a very tight vote from the 45-member House panel tasked with working on expanded gambling legislation in Concord. Speaking in front of almost 250 people at Rockingham Park Wednesday, state Rep. Robert Elliott (R-Salem) said that the consensus right now is that only a handful of voters on the joint committee are undecided about Senate Bill 152. "Right now, the consensus is on that committee – there are 20 representatives for (Senate Bill 152), 20 representatives against it. The other five are going to be the deciding factor." Three subcommittees on revenue, regulations and community impact will come back together today at 1 p.m. in the Legislative Office Building. Elliott said that the chairmen of the …

Supporters of legalizing casino gambling tout benefits and seek to sway any wary state reps.
Supporters of legalizing casino gambling in New Hampshire threw a luncheon for state lawmakers in Concord on Wednesday to further tout what they called real and long-term benefits of a high-end casino. Larry Maggi, chairman of the Washington County Board of Commissioners in Pennsylvania, was one of the guest speakers. He talked about what The Meadows Racetrack & Casino has meant for his county. A former state trooper, Maggi said he was initially concerned that a casino would mean more crime. But, he said, "Those concerns that I had just didn't happen." In New Hampshire, the Joint House Committee of Finance and Ways and Means is scheduled to convene Thursday, at which time subcommittees will begin reporting back their findings on Senate …

Another frontal shot of the facility shows a building with the words "Rockingham Resort" emblazoned over the top.
With a month or two to live, Hardy Macia takes to YouTube urging governor to allow patients to grow their own.
The battle of medicinal marijuana has taken a turn in New Hampshire and at least one cancer patient is not bowled over by the changes. According to a report on New Hampshire Public Radio, the state Senate has altered the medical marijuana bill to remove a provision that would have allowed home grown plants for medical use. The provision was removed from the bill in order to gain approval from Gov. Maggie Hassan. (D-NH) But as NHPR and marijuana advocates noted, Hassan was a previous supporter of the provision as a state Senator four years ago. The changes could keep marijuana from patients for another two years, according to the report. After hearing of the change, Hardy Macia, a former Libertarian Party candidate for Congress in the 2nd …
Rich Killion, spokesperson for Millennium Gaming, sounded off about the entertainment venue on site.
Less than three months after presenting updated plans for a casino at Rockingham Park, Millennium Gaming will again deliver a plan tonight, this time with more additions that show both a hotel and entertainment center on site. The design will be showed off at 7 p.m. in the Belmont Room at Rockingham Park. Millennium Gaming owns the option to buy the 107-year-old racetrack should expanded gambling legislation be passed in the state and the park be awarded a casino bid. Rich Killion, spokesperson for Millennium Gaming, said that the updated design stems from two factors. The first – he said the original legislation in New Hampshire was looking toward multiple facilities, and now the current framework is for a competitive award process that …

Both sides discussed working on the language in Senate Bill 152 to clarify the issue.
Two representatives from the New Hampshire Liquor Commission gave testimony Tuesday before the House casino subcommittee on community impact, with liquor license hours for a gambling facility being the central topic of debate. James Wilson, director of enforcement and licensing for the Liquor Commission, said that his organization assumes that the expanded gambling bill as proposed would allow for alcohol sales from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. at a casino. According to Wilson, those hours are in line with current state liquor laws. But Rep. Patricia Lovejoy (D-Stratham), the panel's chairwoman, said that the bill places no restriction on hours of operation, and in fact the word "hour" is listed only once in the bill and has nothing to do with when …
