Rescheduled: 8th Annual Small Business Day
Navigating federal healthcare reform, exploring financing strategies for your small business, understanding New Hampshire’s new LLC act and hearing from legislative leaders about this year’s top policy issues will be the focus of the Business and Industry Association’s 8th Annual Small Business Day, presented by the BIA Energy Buying Group powered by Usource, with additional support from Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Bank of America and U.S. Trust. The event will be held Feb. 22 at the Holiday Inn, Concord from 7:30 a.m. to noon.
The annual small business event, held in partnership with the New Hampshire Small Business Development Center (NH SBDC), New Hampshire Division of Economic Development, and local and regional chambers of commerce and business associations, is meant to engage small business owners and managers in public policy discussion and debate, as well as provide them with practical and relevant information to help manage and grow their business.
Small Business Day will begin with a panel discussion featuring some of the state’s top elected leaders: Senate Democratic Leader Sylvia Larsen, Senator Andy Sanborn, House Majority Leader Steve Shurtleff and House Republican Policy Leader Laurie Sanborn. The state leadership panel will focus specifically on top small business issues of 2013 and how state elected leaders will resolve them.
Three presentations will follow the legislative panel. The first, “Making New Hampshire’s New LLC Act Work for You,” will examine sweeping changes to laws affecting New Hampshire LLCs in 2013. The new act provides flexibility to LLC owners, clarifies vague and unclear language in the old act, and offers “off-the-shelf” operating agreements for LLC owners and members who do not already have pre-existing agreements. A panel of New Hampshire’s finest small business attorneys – John Cunningham, McLane Graf Raulerson and Middleton; Dwight Sowerby, Drescher and Dokmo; and Claire Howard, Devine Millimet and Branch – will provide an overview of the law, focusing on specific changes designed to help the small business LLC owner.
Next, Chris Way, interim director of the New Hampshire Division of Economic Development, will moderate a panel discussion called “Strategies for Financing Your Small Business.” Small business owners facing the challenge of securing capital will hear from a panel of commercial lenders and representatives of alternative lending programs about financing options that may be open to them.
The final panel, “The Labyrinth: Helping Small Businesses Navigate Healthcare Reform,” will feature experts in health insurance policy and practice who will help small business owners navigate the complex issues surrounding small employer requirements under the Affordable Care Act. They will offer advice for selecting the best option for health insurance coverage, whether through the small group market or health benefit exchange, as well as how to determine if businesses are subject to the pay-or-play provision for those approaching 50 full-time employees.
Gov. Maggie Hassan has also been invited to make closing remarks.
Participating chambers of commerce and business organizations to date include the Greater Dover, Greater Manchester, Greater Salem, Hampton Area, Merrimack, Mount Washington Valley, and Wolfeboro Area chambers of commerce, and the NH Association of Insurance Agents.
The cost to attend Small Business Day is $15 per person and includes continental breakfast. To register, visit the events calendar at BIAofNH.com or call 603.224.5388 x116.
