Republicans Will Only Win When They Fully Embrace Their Platform

In today’s technology driven election climate, it’s not enough for Cornerstone to promote pro-family candidates among issue advocates to make sure a conservative agenda resonates with voters. If Republicans want to win, the Republican Party and its top-ticket candidates must develop recognizable pro-family concepts in their campaigns and fully embrace the conservative cause.

Cornerstone can preach to the choir all it wants, but without a modern political party machine to research, target and reach out to new voters and then get them to the polls armed with conservative facts, the choir just won’t add up to a winning tally. The Democrats understood this dynamic, which is why they won, despite their underlying extremism. Republicans denied they were under attack as the enemy overcame them. They assumed voters would pretend social issues aren’t part of modern politics at the same time that Democrats defined Republican positions on these issues for them.

It didn’t help matters that taxpayer-funded Planned Parenthood spent between $5 million and $7 million on the election, joining Democrats in their misinformation campaign that alleged Republicans want to take away women’s birth control options. According to The Hill, the abortion business saw a 98 to 99 percent return on its election spending investment. This type of spending is certainly a formidable enemy for Republicans who, in large part, simply want to reduce the number of abortions and make sure taxpayers aren’t paying for men and women’s contraceptives against their will.

All it would have taken to set the record straight was some defensive Republican messaging explaining Republican positions on these issues and an offensive strike explaining the Democratic lies and their underlying extremism. Yes, Republicans are at a monetary disadvantage because they don’t rely on taxpayers to fund their campaigns and they use private donations instead. But Republicans have to prove their more frugal approach will work in government by making it work electing conservatives to office.

The Democratic Party just removed the last quasi pro-family issue from their platform; namely, that “abortion should be safe … and rare.” To add insult to injury, Democrats included a new provision that promotes taxpayer-funded abortions. President Obama has consistently defended barbaric procedures such as partial-birth abortion and leaving an infant out to die of starvation when an abortion procedure fails. If the new Democratic platform becomes reality, people who morally object to abortion would be forced to pay for these procedures against their will.

These are easy pickings for Republicans. According to Gallup polls this year (here and here), most Americans are pro-life, and the great majority of those who think abortion should be legal would restrict the procedure to rare circumstances. In other words, voters prefer the Republican platform, and if they knew about it, they would find the Democratic platform outrageous.

When Democrats said Republicans were at war with women, Republicans remained silent on the issues and let themselves be defined that way. When Democrats said Republicans planned to eliminate access to contraceptives, Republicans didn’t explain that they simply believe men and women should pay for their own birth control, vasectomies or condoms. When Democrats said Republicans wanted to stifle immigration reform or end public support for higher education, Republicans didn’t approach single-issue voters with their actual positions. Republicans let single-issue voters believe the fabrications and exaggerations of Democrats across the board, and those voters responded accordingly.

Likewise, Democrats exclaimed that Republicans planned to take away Medicare from seniors. Yet, it was the president himself, in his infamous Obamacare bill, who took away millions of dollars from successful free market elements of the program and devoted them to the failing Medicaid system, instead. He added millions of Americans to Medicaid at a time when doctors are fleeing the program or their practice altogether because the numbers don’t add up for them. Republicans didn’t explain that the president was making Medicare less accessible for seniors; they didn’t explain that Democrats were making it harder for lower income families to get good medical care. These were easy targets for Republicans, but they let Democrats define the issues instead. Seniors and lower-income families came out and voted Democrat because of it.

If the Republican Party has any hope of returning to power, Republicans must embrace their party’s platform and reach out to voters with it. Republicans can’t rely on their old sources of information about voters, they have to get out in the world and find new voters who believe in the same things but just don’t know it. In short, Republicans have to ask for votes and explain why their way is better, or they just simply won’t win elections.

Messaging is not your problem, needing more money is not either. Understanding that you do not represent mainstream America is what you need.

The Republican platform this year told women that they must submit to the burden of carrying a rapist's seed to produce a child.

The platform... the one you're telling Republican's to embrace?
And even you support this? Forcing women, maybe your sister, daughter, mother or even yourself... to heal from the physical and mental trauma of the attack, only to be told that you can't do anything to stop the possible implantation?

This is in the platform you want America to embrace? Honestly?

Right. It is tough to beat Santa Claus in an election. Eventually the money will run out and those that have been living off the government will be wondering what happened and either vote for the other guy (the Republican) or not vote at all.

As for the rapist's seed, I oppose capital punishment for the rapist as well as the unborn child. As soon as the DNA is set, it is a human life. Pure and simple.

I think that some of the left leaning idiots who feel that parental consent is not necessary are just as stupid as the right leaning idiots who feel that abortion should be illegal. Mr. Healy, I can't believe I'm writing this, but i agree with you. But even in the best of situations this discussion is uncomfortable (please set rape an incest aside as obviously disgusting and since parents could be the offender). An abortion can be almost as damaging as an unwanted pregnancy (phycially and emotionally) and anyone who has an abortion needs physical and emotional support afterwards, if the parents are not "in the loop" it can leave the child floundering for that support.

SalemMom, people who are against the law that required under aged girls to obtain approval for an abortion from a parent aren't trying to come between good parents and their daughters- they are recognizing that a young girl might be put in danger if she delayed seeking help, or if her parents put her in danger.

I just don't think that law solves that problem for anyone other than the child who's parents did the terrible thing to put them in that situation to begin with and that set of children needs a whole other level of support/protection that is not even "touched" by this one law.

Dear Mom,
Records show that 13 year old girls are not coming to clinics alone, not in NH. And only a few young women have driven themselves to get there alone. Your horror story isn't happening here, clinic workers care about their patients, and they do what is best for the people they treat. As far as I can see the only ones hurting these vulnerable children are the adults already in their lives who should be caring for them and have failed.

I agree with you again that the clinic workers care about their patients, my concerns have nothing to do with those workers. This is not a NH issue, but a national one. This "horror story" happens. The children who are harmed by their parents do not need this law to help them get an abortion.

An excellent way for the GOP to become and then remain a minority party is by loudly proclaiming that "we lost because we weren't conservative enough." The fact staring them in the face is that Republicans lost because they had become too conservative and were now captives of far-right influences like the Tea Party and Free Staters. The GOP would be better served by a return to the sensible centrist policies of moderate Republicans who avoid extreme social views and support small and efficient government, low taxes, and using states as test labs for new programs and policies. I know. You don't want advice from a Democrat. You'd rather keep on losing. So be it. It's your party.

Actually, we're not. Most of us are more-than-willing to limit elective abortions to early in the pregnancy. (We also recognize that steps taken to make abortion harder to obtain tend to delay abortions into later in the pregnancy.)

*HOWEVER*, one thing we absolutely are adamant about is that the woman's life *ALWAYS* trumps the life of the fetus and yes, that extends throughout the entire pregnancy. So late term abortions, unfortunate though they may be, must remain available as needed to save the life and health of women.

The Obama campaign sent Susan Rice out to slaughter by asking her to tell the US citizens that the Benghazi attacks were a result of a spontaneous riot after viewing a twisted anti-muslim video. The Obama campaign ran adds that told women that a vote for Gov. Romney was a vote to end abortion and access to birth control.

Before you go all crazy and start listing Gov. Romney's lies, I'll leave you with some cynical thoughts. All politicians lie to get elected. Then they lie to stay elected. It has been this way since the beginning of elections.

Rather than rehashing the election, it would be great to see some of the folks on both sides but forth some middle of the road compromises that everyone can live with. It would be nice to see Pres. Obama start that process. He has said he was going to but has talked out the other side of his mouth that he would not budge on his positions.

PC contention was that it was lies that won the President the election. He made no mention of the generic tone of elections. I asked him for a specific lie.

Your first contention about the Ambassador is just plane crazy and certainly not a lie.

Your second contention was that "a vote for Gov. Romney was a vote to end abortion and access to birth control"
Although Mitt Romney alleged final position on birth control and abortion were very moderate, previous iterations of his position included a support for a life at conception bill which would have made many forms of birth control and IVF illegal. He also said he would be delighted to sing a ban on all abortions. Someone might have been lying, but it would have been Mitt Romney.

So the challange still stands, could you name a lie "put forth by the Obama campaign"?

However, a couple of things during the Obama campaign that were deceitful quickly come to mind;

The Obama PAC ad claiming a mans wife lost her battle with cancer because she did not have health insurance after Bain took over the company he worked at.

This is not an ad, but served the same purpose, Harry Reid speaking on the Senate floor that he has personal information that Governor Romney did not pay taxes.

And then the statements by the President, his administration and his supporters that President Obama will not raise taxes on the middle class and that Governor Romney will to pay for the 5T tax cut by raising taxes on the middle class.

So, using the same twisted, but successful, logic that Democrats employed in the last campain, President Obama is a liar, because he supports Reid and the PAC ad. Secondly, the Obama campaign, a Jen Psaki, claimed the campaign knew nothing, but later on, it was proven that she particpated in a conference call, about Soptic, before the ad was released.

President Obama also said he would not raise taxes on the middle class. Obamacare raises taxes. It raises taxes. The Obama administration argued in the Supreme Court that the mandate was a tax and the Supreme Court agreed. He lied.

Where do I begin here? Most of you made some valid points. Here's my take on the abortion issue. I have, since day one, always supported a woman's right to choose what she does with her pregnancy, considering it's HER body! My problem with the Planned Parenthood agenda is that it 'plays' both sides. Yes, Planned Parenthood is for low to no income healthcare for women. That, no one can dispute! What I dispute is why taxpayers should be on the hook for both the abortions and contraceptives that Planned Parenthood dispenses like a Pez gum dispenser. Last I checked, sex was a choice (except in the case of rape). Why should I, the taxpayer, pay for your dumb choices? That was Mitt Romney's message ALL along. Just like his stance on Public Television. If you want to watch that kind of programming, go pay for it yourself. Maybe you've heard of this old concept called 'pay t.v.. Yes, Mitt Romney is against abortions, considering he is a Mormon. But the Catholic church is ALSO against abortions. If you folks are of sound mind when you take your clothes off. then you same 'informed' folks need to deal with the consequences of that! Translation: I'm not willing to pay for it. It seems like common sense has left this Earth. By the way, I'm an atheist :)

Tax payer money does not fund abortion(less than 3% of PP's effort), and it is in all of our best interest that women use contraception(33% of their effort). 40% of their work is spent testing poor people for STI's and the rest of their funding goes for cancer screening.
Planned Parenthood picks up where America drops the ball. They are a valuable resource to our women.

paul,
There is a button labeled [Reply] under each starting comment, if you click on it, you will get a text box that will attach to the original thread. Then you can show some cohesiveness in your thoughts.

I am well aware of your resistance to helping your fellow Americans, but that is not a choice that is available. America does not leave anybody behind.(at least tries not to)

It didn't take long for Flashy to get back to moronic old self. Great to see you back on your feet. Must have been some dark days for you after the election. All that doom and gloom you were selling. Turned out you were full of disinformation. And at least that hasn't changed.

Keep being you Flashy, its always great to have a living caricature of right wing nutbag for us centrist to point at.

CNN video showing the lowest Obama voting county in the United States. It's in Texas (not Mississippi, I know what you're thinking!). And yes, this video is as good as it sounds. A whole lot of stupid!

Not sure if the writer actually read the Republican platform. Here's a part of it:
http://www.gop.com/2012-republican-platform_Renewing/
Please note:
- Marriage is best with a man and woman only.
- Forced labor for people in need.
- More government control over the Internet (this is Republican??)
- A whole section titled "Repealing Obamacare" implying that Obamacare really wasn't about health care
- A section on Education titled "a chance for every child" implying that it's not only about education "but ethical and behavioral norms and traditions." and what could that mean do you suppose?
- Finding various ways of saying, we need to spend less money funding education.
The above link is only one section of this Republican platform which McGinley's editorial supports. It has been rejected. Clearly.

Here is the entire GOP platform statement on preserving and protecting traditional marriage:

"The institution of marriage is the foundation of civil society. Its success as an institution will determine our success as a nation. It has been proven by both experience and endless social science studies that traditional marriage is best for children. Children raised in intact married families are more likely to attend college, are physically and emotionally healthier, are less likely to use drugs or alcohol, engage in crime, or get pregnant outside of marriage. The success of marriage directly impacts the economic well-being of individuals. Furthermore, the future of marriage affects freedom. The lack of family formation not only leads to more government costs, but also to more government control over the lives of its citizens in all aspects. We recognize and honor the courageous efforts of those who bear the many burdens of parenting alone, even as we believe that marriage, the union of one man and one woman must be upheld as the national standard, a goal to stand for, encourage, and promote through laws governing marriage. We embrace the principle that all Americans should be treated with respect and dignity."

Proud Conservative-

There is no unbiased science that proves that traditional marriage is best for children. Healthy children are the product of healthy and loving relationships that can manifest in many forms...grandparents, traditional/same sex marriage, adoption, and even single parent situations. I don't believe that anyone would argue that a two parent situation is always ideal under the right circumstances but the GOP statement is incorrect. As a sociology/anthropology professor, I can state with certainty that the statistics for children who get involved in drugs/alcohol use, commit crimes, or have to terminate a pregnancy has more to do with the social status parent/parents rather than their marital status. I have always identified with the Republican Party because I believed that the ideas that were the foundation for its philosophy were sound...I am starting to question that view in light of the "garbage" I read about how the party is just trying to protect America. The Republican Party always focused on the economy and how to provide jobs for Americans...they need to stay out of peoples bedrooms and they sure a heck need to stop telling a woman what to do with her body (I will concede late term abortions after 6 months are a problem when the mothers life is not in peril). If the party cannot recognize that if they are unwilling to pay for an abortion then they will pay for that child (statistically) to live in prison or be among the poor.

When Al Gore lost and when John Forbes Kerry lost, were there recommendations by pundits and the media that the Democratic party should change its positions on issues such as gay marriage, global warming, higher taxes, government run health care, abortion, etc.

This was just one election; not going to change the core beliefs of a political party.

I'm 63 and I Tired"
by Robert A. Hall

I'm 63. Except for one semester in college when jobs were scarce and a six-month period when I was between jobs, but job-hunting every day, I've worked, hard, since I was 18.. Despite some health challenges, I still put in 50-hour weeks, and haven't called in sick in seven or eight years. I make a good salary, but I didn't inherit my job or my income, and I worked to get where I am. Given the economy, there's no retirement in sight, and I'm tired. Very tired.

I'm tired of being told that I have to "spread the wealth" to people who don't have my work ethic. I'm tired of being told the government will take the money I earned, by force if necessary, and give it to people too lazy to earn it..
I'm tired of being told that I have to pay more taxes to "keep people in their homes." Sure, if they lost their jobs or got sick, I'm willing to help. But if they bought McMansions at three times the price of our paid-off, $250,000 condo, on one-third of my salary, then let the left-wing Congress-critters who passed Fannie and Freddie and the Community Reinvestment Act that created the bubble help them with their own money.
I'm tired of being told how bad America is by left-wing millionaires like Michael Moore, George Soros and Hollywood Entertainers who live in luxury because of the opportunities America offers. In thirty years, if they get their way, the United States will have the economy of Zimbabwe , the freedom of the press of China , the crime and violence of Mexico , the tolerance for Christian people of Iran , and the freedom of speech of Venezuela .

I'm tired of being told that Islam is a "Religion of Peace," when every day I can read dozens of stories of Muslim men killing their sisters, wives and daughters for their family "honor"; of Muslims rioting over some slight offense; of Muslims murdering Christian and Jews because they aren't "believers"; of Muslims burning schools for girls; of Muslims stoning teenage rape victims to death for "adultery"; of Muslims mutilating the genitals of little girls; all in the name of Allah, because the Qur'an and Shari'a law tells them to.
I'm tired of being told that "race doesn't matter" in the post-racial world of Obama, when it's all that matters in affirmative action jobs, lower college admission and graduation standards for minorities (harming them the most), government contract set-asides, tolerance for the ghetto culture of violence and fatherless children that hurts minorities more than anyone, and in the appointment of U.S. Senators from Illinois.

I'm tired of being told that out of "tolerance for other cultures" we must let Saudi Arabia use our oil money to fund mosques and mandrassa Islamic schools to preach hate in America , while no American group is allowed to fund a church, synagogue or religious school in Saudi Arabia to teach love and tolerance.
I'm tired of being told I must lower my living standard to fight global warming, which no one is allowed to debate. My wife and I live in a two-bedroom apartment and carpool together five miles to our jobs. We also own a three-bedroom condo where our daughter and granddaughter live. Our carbon footprint is about 5% of Al Gore's, and if you're greener than Gore, you're green enough.
I'm tired of being told that drug addicts have a disease, and I must help support and treat them, and pay for the damage they do. Did a giant germ rush out of a dark alley, grab them, and stuff white powder up their noses while they tried to fight it off? I don't think Gay people choose to be Gay, but I damn sure think druggies chose to take drugs. And I'm tired of harassment from cool people treating me like a freak when I tell them I never tried marijuana.

I'm tired of illegal aliens being called "undocumented workers," especially the ones who aren't working, but are living on welfare or crime. What's next? Calling drug dealers, "Undocumented Pharmacists"? And, no, I'm not against Hispanics. Most of them are Catholic, and it's been a few hundred years since Catholics wanted to kill me for my religion. I'm willing to fast track for citizenship any Hispanic person, who can speak English, doesn't have a criminal record and who is self-supporting without family on welfare, or who serves honorably for three years in our military.... Those are the citizens we need.

I'm tired of hearing wealthy athletes, entertainers and politicians of both parties talking about innocent mistakes, stupid mistakes or youthful mistakes, when we all know they think their only mistake was getting caught. I'm tired of people with a sense of entitlement, rich or poor.
Speaking of poor, I'm tired of hearing people with air-conditioned homes, color TVs and two cars called poor. The majority of Americans didn't have that in 1970, but we didn't know we were "poor." The poverty pimps have to keep changing the definition of poor to keep the dollars flowing.
I'm real tired of people who don't take responsibility for their lives and actions. I'm tired of hearing them blame the government, or discrimination or big-whatever for their problems.
Yes, I'm d--- tired. But I'm also glad to be 63. Because, mostly, I'm not going to have to see the world these people are making. I'm just sorry for my granddaughter..

These screeds are never the whole truth; they're just one yahoo's opinions. And this yahoo attended public schools, public universities, and public colleges, probably gets all of his (expensive) medical care from the VA, and now he wants to complain about how much government and liberals are costing him.

And these screeds are a dime a dozen, posted and re-posted on thousands of discussion boards across the nation by folks like you.

Mr. Atlant,

Can you enlighten us what is "whole truth" and what isn't in this screed?. And is the definition of a "Yahoo" is simply someone you don't agree with? Even better, does your definition of a "Yahoo" carry over to those veterans who disagree with you also?
