Will You Miss Saturday Mail Delivery?

A proposal would end Saturday first-class mail delivery.

The U.S. Postal Service will reportedly announce today that it will stop Saturday first-class mail delivery by Aug. 1, reported CBS News.

Mail personnel have delivered mail on Saturdays for 150 years, but the plan is to end regular mail service, while maintaining Saturday delivery for packages and express mail, said CBS News.

The move is the latest attempt by the cash-strapped federal department to save money. It has already cut employees and service, but still reportedly lost $16 billion last year.

What do you think about this idea? Would you miss Saturday mail service?

It's about time. They should drop to 3 days a week no one really needs mail it's mostly junk anyway. Email is the only way to go its instant and free

No, and they should reconsider some of the very rural areas they deliver to.

Great move. Should have been done long ago. With email, the only thing I get is junk mail. Only occasionally do I get anything useful.

I have to disagree... I will really miss it. In addition, there are many elderly people who do not understand the technology or have computers to write emails or use online banking and bill pay. Our elderly feel isolated enough without eliminating this means for them to communicate.

the mail is the only line of communication for some people... losing saturdays will be one more nail in the coffin! "you dont know what you've got till it's gone"

Higher and higher prices for less and less service - what else would you expect from government? And these are the people we need to manage the health care system? Wait until the hospitals close on Saturdays.

Interesting discussion - if I consider what I get each day in the US Mail it is 90% catalogs that I didn't request, want, or even read - it goes from the mailbox to the recycling bin. If you think that the Postal service was initially designed to carry letters but is now handling tons and tons of unwanted catalogs it is no wonder they are having cost issues. It disgusts me that I have to toss all that material daily - what a waste of resources (ink, paper and the trees they came from, the power to produce them, etc. etc.). I do periodically call to opt out of getting them but the minute you buy anything online you're added back to that supplier and it seems many other related suppliers. It's too bad there isn't something like a 'do not call' list that the P.O. could put in place to stop this practice.

I agree that too many catalogs are sent out by all the sellers. But consider this - if it wasn't for all that junk advertising, you probably wouldn't have even known about the articles you buy online or what companies sell them.

@Prooud - Sorry but that is not the case at all - the catalogs do nothing to stimulate purchases. I know the retailers I like and their websites.

We don't need Saturday mail. Shut it down and save money by reducing the number of staff.

Mail three days a week would be plenty. If you absolutely have to get something overnight or in two days, UPS and FedEx can do that for you. Does it really make a difference if you get your PSNH bill on Monday or Wednesday???y

I don't like it. I like the service. Here's a way that the upcoming change will have an adverse impact on average people:

Say goodbye to your Netflix movies arriving on Saturday for watching that night or Sunday. Say goodbye to three DVDs in a single week's turnaround time for your $8/mo. fee.

Your Netflix service will become less valuable without dropping its price.

What???? Do you even subscribe to Netflix? Order you DVDs so they arrive on Friday. Better yet, subscribe to it online and watch whatever you want whenever you want as often as you want.

Won't miss it at all; less junk mail to throw away = less trips to the transfer station. As for those that are not technology saavy it is time to brush up; we as a country will not be able to delivery the services you demand unless we all change and this is one of those changes.
