Supply and demand according to analysts shows crude oil should be about $80 dollars a barrel. Slow world growth is keeping crude prices from rising. Uncertainty over oil supply according to the same people adds another $10 to $20. That is the speculation part but just on crude prices. Refineries have markets and issues of their own.. By the way Obama has restricted leases on government lands. The private land development is the source of almost all of the new oil. So there are lots of reason. Personally if you want to keep oil prices down in the long run there is no substitute for increased drilling and infrastructure. Obama has restricted expanding drilling on government land as well as well known blocking of infrastructure improvements as well as what some say is over regulation. I blame federal policies that have showered tax incentives on oil and gas companies and ignored alternatives. There are few realistic choices for the US consumer now, so these corporations can name their price.
