VIDEO: Cilley on Gambling, Taxes at the Rock

Democratic gubernatorial hopeful first to appear in summer speaker series in Salem.

Former state Sen. Jackie Cilley (D-Barrington) became the first gubernatorial candidate to appear at the 2012 Gubernatorial Speaker Series Tuesday night and spoke to about 30 people at the racetrack.

Cilley, one of three Democrats vying to replace Gov. John Lynch, reiterated her stance that she won't "play pledge politics" when it comes to finding ways to solve the greatest problems facing New Hampshire.

"We need a conversation that there is a better way to do things, and it can fit into our traditions and culture," Cilley said.

When speaking of one of the seminal issues on the mind of Salem voters, Cilley said she is not opposed to expanded gambling but wants legislation that keeps in mind the desires of locals, contains strong oversight and "a wall between that industry and its ability to buy legislative influence."

The gubernatorial speakers series is sponsored by the Greater Salem Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Hudson Chamber of Commerce, Rockingham Park and Area News Group. The next speaker will be Republican candidate Kevin Smith next Tuesday at 7 p.m.
