The Case for Mitt Romney

Columnist outlines why she thinks the former Massachusetts governor will win on Tuesday.

I have been digging through polling cross-tabs, Electoral College maps, political blogs and countless interviews with “experts.” More importantly, I am listening to real people who live in the real world, outside the tight little universe of political operatives and analysts: parents, business owners, teachers, police officer, retirees and veterans.

And as a result, I am calling it for Mitt Romney, and I’m calling it big. I say Mitt wins it with 300-plus Electoral College votes. I give him New Hampshire by at least 3 points. And, just between you and me, I think I am being conservative here. If he wins with over 310 Electoral College votes, I won’t be surprised.

The simple truth is that you can’t tell a fish it’s not wet. No matter how many different ways the President tries to tell us it’s “getting better” and “the private sector is doing fine,” real Americans living their real lives know better. How do you tell a single mother working two jobs and still can’t afford milk to give it four more years? How do you tell a father who can’t buy Christmas gifts for his children and is worried about losing the house to just hold on a little bit longer?

Different elections are influenced by different circumstances. There are economy elections, security elections, “change” elections, but every election is led by emotions. Voting is an emotional act and most voters are led by their gut instincts. It’s not hard to guess what their guts are telling them when 23 million Americans are unemployed and underemployed, more have fallen into poverty than at any other time in 17 years, and our national debt is at 16 trillion dollars.

It’s not just my gut instinct though. A rational analysis backs me up.

POLLS. I know the majority of polls suggest it is too close to call, but the polls are inherently flawed, even those that give Mitt Romney a slight edge. The polls are all using a 2008 turnout model for their sample. In doing so, the pollsters are ignoring the fact that the 2008 turnout was pushed by several influences that no longer exist, including Bush fatigue, an historic campaign, and a Republican effort that was outspent 4-1.

Voting intensity – that is, the percentage of voters who identify as a particular party and say they are ‘very likely’ to vote – highly favors Republicans in 2012, as opposed to 2008 when the opposite was true, and the majority of Americans believe our country is on ‘the wrong track.’

GRASSROOTS. This is an area where Mitt Romney’s efforts are out-performing both Barack Obama and John McCain. Here in New Hampshire, the Romney victory effort recently surpassed 1 million voter contacts and we are not the only state where this is happening. While the Obama campaign brags about the number of offices they have, they do not talk about the number of voter contacts they have made. When the President came to Nashua last week, cars in the downtown area were plastered with yellow leaflets offering people $14.00/hour to knock on doors for the Obama campaign. Meanwhile, the Romney volunteers were busy hitting thousands of doors across the state that day.

In 2008, Barack Obama far outpaced John McCain in early voting and absentee voting. In 2012 he has lost that advantage. In Iowa, Colorado, Florida, Virginia, North Carolina and Nevada Romney is outperforming by most early voting/absentee measures. Iowa is particularly interesting, where Democrats tend to vote by early voting and Republicans tend to vote on Election Day. For the first time, Republicans have a registration advantage in Iowa and Democrats will need to go into Election Day, by many estimates, with about a 130,000 vote lead to win Iowa… and they don’t have it yet.

INDEPENDENTS. Independent are consistently breaking for Mitt Romney in every battleground state. In 23 out of 25 polls released since the first Presidential debate, Romney has led among independents by an average of 7 points. Ohio is a good example. For the past month, Romney has led among independents in Ohio by 6.2 percent. In the last five major statewide races in Ohio, independents have picked the winners and there is no good reason to believe this election will be any different.

BATTLEGROUND STATES. Battleground states are breaking consistently for Mitt Romney. If you were a fly on the wall of Obama For America, you would know that they know they have already lost Florida. Romney will win New Hampshire, Florida, Colorado, Virginia and likely Iowa and Nevada. It will be close, but I am calling Ohio for Mitt Romney. He is now in play in states that President Obama never thought he would have to defend, like Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan. Ninety-six percent of Pennsylvania’s voters vote on Election Day, and Romney is narrowing the gap in Pennsylvania.

WHO DO WE LIKE? The President’s approval rating remains under 50 percent and Mitt Romney’s “favorables” have been consistently on the rise since the first debate.

BROKEN PROMISES. The deficit has not been cut in half, the unemployment rate is not under 6 percent, we have not seen the most transparent administration ever, he has not united us, he has worsened class warfare and created new divisions, he has attacked civil liberties like freedom of religion, he has abused executive privilege, Washington is still broken, and al-Qaeda is alive and well, continuing to recruit, train, plan and execute attacks.

Americans are exhausted. They are tired working overtime, tired of doing the stimulus math, tired of defending their faith and their country, tired of trying to decipher the twisted political-speak that never quite seems to answer the question, tired of debt, depressions and despair.

It’s easy to listen to real people in the real world and understand how this election is going to turn out.  Americans are tired of being tired and that will be reflected in their votes on November 6th.

It's only improving in your imagination, not in fact.

Nationwide unemployment went up to 7.9% in the recent announcement, higher than it was the day Obama took office! That is NOT an improvement.

NH Unemployment is UP FOURTEEN PERCENT from April to September. That is NOT an improvement.

Middle income down by thousands of dollars a year.

New business startups at a 30 year low.

Medical insurance premiums up.

The number of people on food stamps is UP almost 50% since Obama took office.

Gas prices are up about double and 582,000 manufacturing jobs have been lost since he took office.

ALL of those and many other items are going in the WRONG direction and will continue going downhill if Obama is reelected.

Only a fool could really believe that it's an improvement when unemployment is higher now than when their president took office.

I wish everyone would take a step back and look at the last 8 years... leaders have saddled us with huge debt, wars we should have never been in, lied to us (Bush and Obama), tacked on huge social programs we cant affort and the result is a dead recovery and downward pressure on the dollar (why do you think gas has gone up when a world wide recession is occuring). We need a new leader that is focused on the bottom line and can grow jobs. I belive Mitt Romney will go down as one of the best presidents. Obama and Bush will go down as two of the worst.

Nice try Ericnh. I mean your desperate attempt to separate Romney from Bush
and then lump Obama and Bush together as one and the same!!!!!!!!!!!! OK
It was not really a nice try. It was very feeble actually. Romney = Bush on every
pertinent economic policy that got us into this mess and he wants another war
In Iran. Obama's policies are working. Consumer confidence is up, Housing is on the mend Auto sales are growing and we now have had 32 straight month of private sector job growth. Osama Bin Laden is dead,
FEMA is now highly professional organization, and millions have access to health care. Obama is going to win a second term.

Mike Healey

"polls are inherently flawed"
So the President could be doing even better than the polls suggest?

President Obama’s campaign has massively invested in building a get out of the vote effort that dwarfs even their 2008 ground game

President Obama continues to get endorsements from prominent independents like Bloomberg, as well as Republicans like Christie and Powell.

President Obama has consistently lead in all battleground states.

President Obama's likability numbers have always been better that Mitt Romney's, by as much as 22 percentage points.

And that whole broken promises rant hasn't an ounce of reality in it, but what we have come to expect from Jennifer's crazy right wing rants.

Polls have all been weighted for a repeat of 8% more Democrats voting as in 2008. This is simply not going to happen this year, especially after the 2010 wipeout in congress. Polls will be close to even turnout or slight more to R turnout (closer to 2000 & 2004).

His GOTV is not nearly as strong as 2008. He's down a net of 262K votes in OH from 2008 at this time these are facts posted by the OH State government.

Prominent independents such as Bloomberg? I guess you aren't watching the news. He wanted to still host, and even run, in the Marathon this weekend, while woman and children are homeless, hungry, have no transportation, and can't even go to the bathroom while have 40K marathon runners try to occupy much needed hotels for shelters. It took FEMA 3-days to get to Staten Island. As this gets worse over the weekend, big negative for Obama AND Bloomberg.

Favorably is a NON factor since the debates. It's even. Look at Right Track/Wrong track severely negative for Obama. His approval on ObamaCare is 60% want it repealed.

He's defending MN, MI, AND PA. $10M going into GOP ads just this weekend in PA. They are sending Clinton there for 4 stops on this BLUE firewall state. They are scrambling to get volunteers to help this weekend since they never paid any attention to it.

Independents have "consistently" been 7-12% in favor of Romney. Any undecideds will break 3-1 to the challenger, this is an historical fact. Believe what you want tho.

As of 7:53 p.m. on Nov. 1, renowned statistician Nate Silver has increased Obama's chances of winning the election to 80.9% Obama's chances of winning New Hampshire have increased according to Silver to 78%. Romney's momentum has turned into "nomentum" having ended on Oct. 12. Since that time according to Silver, Obama's chances of winning the election have been steadily increasing. In 2008, Sliver correctly predicted the winner in 49 of 50 states and in all 35 senatorial contests. In this case, just brushing aside data with a solid record of accuracy goes by a name - that name is denial. Denial is defense mechanism people use when they don't want to face the truth.

Jennifer: Some points to consider: Obama has:
• Saved the auto industry (at political risk)
• Corrected an economy on the precipice of another Great Depression.
• Added over 5 million jobs in the 2.5 years since the turn-around.
• Lowered student loans by cutting out the bank subsidies
• Mandated Wall Street reform. (Would like to see more of this, myself)
• Passed an Affordable Care Act – one very much like MA’s Romneycare.
• Decreased our dependence on foreign oil w/ increased investment in multiple domestic energy sources.

• Raised fuel efficiency standards
• Ended one war with specific plans to end another
• Decimated Al Qaeda & killing Bin laden.
• Moved toward marriage equality.
• Ended "don't ask don't tell" w/o negative consequences.
• Enacted what was possible w/o Congressional cooperation for Dreamer Immigrants
• Dealt with a huge deep-water Gulf oil spill and a Pacific tsunami that wreaked havoc on a struggling economy
• Promoted justice for women who have been underpaid.

One thing Romney will do is to loosen the restrictions on business that has caused them to sit on $500 Billion because they are unsure if expanding in the US is financially possible. Another way is to open trade in Latin America so that American products can more easily be sold there. Another is to lower the corporate tax rate so that we no longer have such a high tax that companies choose to locate abroad where the tax is lower. Tell me, what exactly is Obama going to do?

The simple fact that the GOP has from day one been intent on the destruction of this President by any and all means possible - To destroy an economy in hopes of winning power back is the most poisonous and treasonous act an elected lawmaker can partake in.

Mike- What can Romney do to save jobs? He has already told you. Get rid of Obamacare and ease regulations on small businesses.

http://michellemalkin.com/2012/10/31/obamas-layoff-bomb/
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported last Tuesday that employers issued 1,316 “mass layoff actions” (affecting 50 workers or more) in September; more than 122,000 workers were affected overall.
Last week, Ohio-based auto parts manufacturer Dana Holding Corp. warned employees of potential layoffs amid “looming concern” about the economy. President and CEO Roger Wood specifically mentioned the walloping burden of “increasing taxes on small businesses” and the need to “offset increased costs that are placed on us through new laws and regulations.”

Case in point: Obamacare. The mandate will cost Dana Holding Corp., which employs some 24,500 workers, “approximately $24 million over the next six years in additional U.S. health care expenses.”

Obamacare’s impending 2.3 percent medical device excise tax has already wrought havoc on the industry:

Stryker, a maker of artificial hips and knees based in Kalamazoo, Mich., is slashing 5 percent of its global workforce (an estimated 1,000 workers) this coming year to reduce costs related to Obamacare’s taxes and mandates.

Covidien, a N.Y.-based surgical supplies manufacturer, recently announced layoffs of 200 American workers and plans to move some of its plant work to Mexico and Costa Rica, in part because of the coming tax hit.

Mass.-based Zoll Medical Corp., which makes defibrillators and employs some 1,800 workers in the U.S. and around the world, says the medical device tax will cost the company between $5 million and $10 million a year.

This July, Indiana’s Cook Medical Inc. shelved plans to open five new plants because of the imminent medical device tax hit. They are not alone

Have NO stand on any issue - or should I say EVERY stand on all issues depending upon the audience of the moment. Pretty much the same thing. I can understand your Republican bias. What I can't understand is the parallel universe you and your candidates inhabit. President Obama is most certainly getting a 2nd term - in spite of your delusions. If people spent as much time contacting their Senators and Congressmen when they are in session with their views as they do complaining like in this Column something might change.
As you may have noticed Mayor Blumburg of NYC just backed off having the race tomorrow because of people's outrage.
If we as Americans instead of Republicans or Democrats voiced out outrage over things that are just plain wrong we could change a lot of things.
Hold your office holders responsible for their voting record.
If they know they are putting their career at risk things might change.

Go ahead and make your case, Ms. Horn. Mitt Romney will lose anyway. He's always behind but never catching up. He wouldn't need to be singing about his "momentum" if he was ahead.

Regardez-vous Chris Christie, s'il vous plaît: He can read the writing on the wall. He's preemptively washing Romney's stench of failure off himself before it happens.

He knows which way the wind blows. After Hurricane Sandy, how could he not?

The weathercock points to an Obama victory.

Christie, a Blue State Republican, has just as much an eye on his own future as he is concerned about effective disaster relief. His bear hug embrace of President Obama is a little too effusive for a guy who's supposed to be a Romney surrogate with a future role under, or favorite consideration with, a copartisan president in a Romney White House. Ain't gonna happen, and Christie knows it.

He needs to get on Obama's good side now because, just like Heaven and Hell, there comes a time when it's too late to kiss and make nice.

President Obama will be reelected, and Christie is adjusting.

Expediency isn't evil; it's realistic. Christie didn't have to kiss Obama's derrière so effusively. Another Republican would have found a way to hold Obama at arm's length.

It's just speculation, but, still, everything someone does has effects and alternate reality consequences. If Christie thought Romney was on track to win, then I think he would have calibrated his public statements differently.

Let's face the facts. Obama has not delivered on the economy, jobs, energy & foreign policy. He is not willing to sit down & negotiate with Congress and even when he had control of Congress he could not deliver. He stated in 2008 that if he could not get the job done then he does not deserve a second term. Obama fired the President of GM for poor performance, it is now time to fire Obama!! Give Romney a chance and if he doesn't get the job done in four years then we will fire him too! Wake up America before it is too late!!!

How about the REAL FACTS. The economy was in FREEFALL January 2009. There has been slower than hoped, but sure growth since. Would have been so much better if the President had actually gotten ANY cooperation on HIS jobs bill from Congress in the past 2 years. The President has been more than willing to negotiate across the isle and has been rebuffed on all attempts. Again, by a do-nothing, one-goal Congress. REAL FACT: If Romney gets elected we go back to the Bush doctrine and we all know how well that worked out. This President needs another term to finish the job. What we definitely DON'T need is to go back in time to the crowd that caused this mess in the first place. So I also say 'Wake up America before it's too late'. Base your vote on REAL FACTS and let's go FORWARD.

Whatever gets you through the night, Dumpy, but keep in mind that there are only 3 more nights that you will have to live in this delusional dream state that Romney has a chance. The country has seen him for who he is; a core-less person willing to say anything at anytime to anybody, if it is to his own advantage. Then when something happens, like Sandy, he refused to answer a single question posed to him about FEMA.

Sandy was the October surprise and where he could have come out with a strong vision on national assistance, however he may see it, instead he folded. The whole nation watched him shrink down to the weasel that he is. A man with no real vision, just an empty shell willing to repeat anybody else's vision when and where it conveniences him.

Tell you what, show us the PROOF on this site. Give us the 'Jobs bills' numbers so we can all get better informed by looking them up for ourselves. Boener, in a recent interview on Fox said that they had submitted 30 jobs bills to the Senate'. TOTAL NONSENSE! If you look at the bills he's referring to only ONE (related to immigrant employment) is anything to do with actual jobs creation. It amazes me to no end that Congress can actually send 30 (yes 30) bills to the Senate to repeal ObamaCare but only one jobs bill relating to immigrants. If the information you believe to be true about 20 jobs bills actually WAS true, I would applaud Congress. Unfortunately, this Congress not only hasn't done their job for the American people, they have done everything in their power to bring down this President. Don't forget that Mitch McConnell made it their FIRST priority. C'mon now - SHOW US YOUR PROOF.

Because he is talking about going to war against iran and if that happens the world is not going to put up with the united states pushing their weight around and think that they can continue to get away with it. We would be looking at China and Russia getting involved in the next war and also Iran will not be a pushover like Iraq was. Iran's military would fight us tooth and nail until the last person is dead. Also the american people are not going to put up with another war losing their sons, daughters, nieces, or nephews for the wrong reason. Enough is enough with the united states getting involved with worthless wars. If you are wanting another war why don't you take your stupid 70 year old self and pack your bags and go fight in the middle east and then come back and tell america how great it is to fight those arabs who are not bothering anybody here in the united states.

We all know how the Republican party's anchor to all their economic thinking is based on their trickle down theory, despite the fact that we saw that it didn't work when enacted under Bush. So what recently happened was that the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service did a study on this and their study found that there is no correlation between these policies and economic growth, so given that is 99.9% of what Romney is campaigning on, Republicans panicked and the report was buried.

Here is the article on it:
