SHS Hires Within for New Head Football Coach

The hire became official last week.

According to the Union Leader, the Salem High School football team has found its replacement for Adam Gagne, who served as coach during a dismal 0-11 season last year.

That new hire will be Bob Pike, who according to the paper has been an assistant coach for the team for the least three seasons. The hire became official on Tuesday night.

The entire culture that is around the SHS football team is disturbing. End the program now and be done with it.

The seniors on the football team have their own locker room. The culture I refer to is the kind you see in movies like "Friday Night Lights". Nothing but an avenue for bullying !

SHS should end ALL sports programs, its a big waste of money to taxpayers. Have the parents foot the bill and form private leagues if they want sports. Every parent thinks their kid is gonna get a scholarship, please.

Are you kidding me? You people have to get a clue. Taking away sports? You people have no idea what you are talking about. I graduated in 1998 after playing 3 years of football and 4 years of baseball.

I look back all the time and am thankful for what my experience through high school sports has given me in my day to day life now in my early thirtys.

Private leagues? Whats next? Get a clue and a life. If you do not like it do not pay your taxes and see how far that gets you. Its people like you that are making this world harder and harder to live in.

Tom you are so correct. All the activities at the school including sports are important for kids to learn how to deal with others in an open environment. Of course there can be problems from time to time but that can be expected anywhere with any group. The important part is to make sure that the advisers and coaches understand that it is their responsibility to ensure that negative cultures do not evolve. In my opinion, the athletic director does put too much emphasis on football and should be reminded that it is an extra curricular activity and not the sole product of the school.
These people who want the parents to pay got this stuff for free when they were in school and need to realize that it's time to pay back. But I'm sure they will just whine that this economy is much worse than when they were in school.

LOVE NH: It's the seniors in this town that refuse to "pay back". Just look at all the school votes over the last few years and you will see i'm right.

Riley Reid shows us the perfect example of ageism.

BTW it is not just Seniors who are opposed to wasteful spending.

Love. You are right on. may I ask how the athletic director puts too much emphasis on football? please remember football teams help offset the cost of a lot of the other sports and activities that the school puts on for the students. hopefully you can drive several 100 or even a 1000 or 2 on a Friday night to bring in money for the school.

@ RR - That's not a fair statement. Speaking for myself and other seniors I know, we are 100% behind educating the children of Salem, as well as supporting their sports programs. We fully expect a huge part our tax dollars to go towards education and other school activities. After all, our own children had that privelege, and they have turned into fine citizens. Just when did people become so greedy cold and uncaring!

So why don't we have a new high school, JR high, or upgrade's to our elementary schools ?

Riley. Have you attended Salem High School in the past? Have you ever played sports growing up?
