Salem Selectman candidate Stephen Kelly no longer wants to serve on the board, according to a report from the Union Leader.
Kelly, who recently filed to run againt incumbent Pat Hargreaves, can't remove his name from the ballot. According to the report, Kelly decided after attending a few board meetings that the position wasn't what he had in mind.
Should he win the seat in March, Kelly would have to decline the position, in which case the other board members would likely appoint Hargreaves.

Hargreaves side steps another one! This is unfortunate or was it always Kelly's plan to not take the seat and be a buffer for our "not" illustrious leader ? How does one not know what the BOS entails if they file to run for a seat ?

Riley you always amaze me, so it is possible!

Well I'm voting for Kelly anyway. The rest of the BOS doesn't have to appoint Hargreaves so we could get lucky.

I'm voting for Kelly as well. I do wonder who talked him out of staying in the race and why he announced it to the UL and not to other media outlets ? Maybe Pat had a heart to heart with him at the lock shop ?
Not sure but if Kelly wins and then says no I would think we'd have to have a special election which might bring out other candidates.

Could anyone possibly not side with Mr. Kelly? After seeing what is happening with the BOS and Keith Hickey. The Salem Patriot’s thumbs article has a comment that explains it all. All the town’s employees morale is low except the ones that drink the same cool aid that Hickey drinks and it has been that way since he decided to unleash genocide on all town employees that could have a future retirement package and have worked for the town for years. Out sourcing, hiding fee’s, manipulating funds, conflict of interest issues, hiring friends and the list goes on. I for one welcome any AG office investigation. So ask yourself, would you run for a BOS position? Not to mention you would be outnumbered by incompetent and small narrow minded thinking members that have no clue between a small business and a how a town is run.

You are the one I thought of immediately when I read that thumbs down..when will you finally get a life and stop with your sour tactics. The Town Hall and the Manager are doing a fine job. Now why not any complaints been submitted against the Town Manager to Ms McKean? Or is she also part of the conspiracy ring?
Unless you have some real proof get off the band wagon.

@Jane: That post in thumbs was right on the money. Department heads don't trust the town manager and if you know anyone who works in town hall ask them what "being hickey'd" means. Morale is low and a lot of long time employees worry if they will make it to retirement before their positions are eliminated or out sourced. No one working for the town feels appreciated and a lot of that comes from comments made by some on the BOS.

If Kelly was to win and didn't accept the position. Then the board would appoint someone to fill that seat until the next election. At which time it's a race for a seat with a 2 year term.

lol, very possible but the likely hood of Kelly now are slim to none. You'd be better off trying to find a write in candidate and push him or her

Riley why don't you let a trial balloon go? Then we could see how much support your ideas could muster.

I'm sorry but I cannot take credit for the thumbs down article. So I guess I am not the only sour person in Salem. Maybe you should read this Patch story and then go ask for the real numbers. (http://salem-nh.patch.com/articles/exclusive-former-it-employee-files-ethics-complaint-against-town) while your reading keep in mind that the actual cost after employee separation and the upfront funds actually cost the town more but that was never divulged or investigated by the BOS.
