School Renovations Forum Tonight at SHS

Plans to renovate either two or three elementary schools expected to be presented.

A public forum on the future of school renovations in Salem is scheduled to take place at 7 p.m. tonight at Salem High School in the Seifert Auditorium.

The forum had originally been scheduled for last month but was pushed back due to Hurricane Sandy.

At the forum, the Salem School Board will be seeking input from the public and questions regarding their plans for future school renovations.

The agenda for the evening is available here.

It is expected the School Board will present several ideas for plans that renovate some combination of the three remaining elementary schools in town.

A possibility includes renovating Fisk and Soule Elementary Schools but not Haigh Elementary School. If the two-school plan passes, Haigh would be the last elementary school not to be renovated in Salem.

Barron, Lancaster and North Salem Elementary Schools were all renovated in the last several years.

Plans to renovate the high school, the school's Career and Technical Education Center and Woodbury Middle School are also in the works.

A $22 million bond to renovate all three of the Fisk, Soule and Haigh Schools failed receive the needed 60 percent to pass at last March's election.

The school district recently commissioned an enrollment study that shows a precipitous decline in Salem school enrollments in the coming years.
