Ron Paul Silenced by CBS?

GOP candidate says he was deliberately limited to 90 seconds of air time in Saturday's debate.

Both Ron Paul and Michele Bachmann are crying foul after what they said were unfair efforts to limit their air time during CBS' Republican presidential debate on Saturday night.

In an email sent out after the debate entitled "What a Joke," the Paul campaign ripped CBS for allowing the Texas Congressman only a minute and a half of air time in the 90 minute debate.

"It literally made me sick watching the mainstream media once again silence the one sane voice in this election," said Campaign Manager John Tate. "The one dissenter to a decade of unchecked war. The one candidate who stands for true defense and actual constitutional government. Ron Paul was silenced, in perhaps the most important debate of the cycle."

Michele Bachmann's campaign made a similar claim, releasing an email it said was inadvertently sent to Communications Director Alice Stewart by a CBS employee that said Bachmann wasn't going to get many questions, so they should try to get another candidate for a post-debate show.

"I was just speaking with Alice Stewart... about the Congresswoman or a senior member if (sic) her staff joining you for the webshow. She said she would be happy to arrange," said one CBS employee in an email sent Saturday afternoon, hours before the debate.

John Dickerson, a CBS News political analyst, then responded, "Okay let's keep it loose though since she's not going to get many questions and she's nearly off the charts in the hopes that we can get someone else."

The campaign said the email indicated "a planned effort to limit questions to Michele Bachmann at tonight's CBS/National Journal Debate."

No question about it. CBS and the establishment media elite is biased and manipulative. We don't need their prejudice of who meets "their" criteria of what marks a candidate to be viable. It is up to us the People and viewers to decide and to do that we need an IMPARTIAL coverage with a fair amount of time distributed among ALL candidates. In our generation we will see the end of the elite establishement media. The have done generational damage and helped raise multiple generations of young people that no little if anything of American history, the Constitution, the First Principles of individual freedom and Natural Rights which is Small Limited government. We now have many options for how we get our information. Let's hope and pray it is not too late. CBS and Progressive establishment media, give it a rest . . . report the fact, report objectively and keep an arms length distance. Remember, we the people are the story, don't make yourselves the story.

I couldn't of said it better myself. We can't depend on the media on the left or right to be fair and impartial because, they have proven they are not. Ron Paul's messages have to be spread by its supporters. We can do this by blogging, placing bumper stickers on our cars, placing lawn signs up, writing commentaries in our local papers, calling in to radio talk shows, and spreading the word to everyone willing to listen to you.
GO RON PAUL 2012

"Progressive establishment media"

You've got to be kidding. Americans wouldn't know "progressive media" if it fell on them. The media is corporate. It ain't hippies running the huge broadcast outlets.
People hear something often enough, and they'll believe it, and so many have bought the "liberal media" canard. It's crap.

David, he did say "elite establishment", not "progressive establishment".

I'd say most national media are in favor of a large, powerful central government, when it comes to both domestic and foreign policy, rather than being primarily left or right.

Those who want less centralization of power, less interventionism, or more local solutions don't have much of a voice. The media frames the debate as if it's all about fighting over this one massive central power, which must be used to force one's opinions on everyone else in the whole country.

"I'd say most national media are in favor of a large, powerful central government, when it comes to both domestic and foreign policy, rather than being primarily left or right." - Interesting. I don't understand, though. Why?

"Those who want less centralization of power, less interventionism, or more local solutions don't have much of a voice." - I am in complete agreement with you.

David, I'm not sure if you're asking why I think this, or why they're biased in that way.

I don't think I could say for certain what the motivations of these people are, but I could brainstorm a couple. For starters, I do think federal politicans/bureacrats, national media, and certain banks/corporate executives tend to run in the same circles/scratch each others' back - and centralized power benfits all of them.

Also, I think national media by definition needs national stories to talk about -- they need their whole audience to care. If they can show a debate between one person who wants to force everyone to do X (or take everyone's money to do X), and a second person who wants to force everyone to do Y (or take everyone's money to do Y), they've got compelling national TV.

The guy who wants to let each state, town, or individual choose between X and Y for themselves does not create compelling TV, because there's little conflict. Suppose political issues were determined mostly locally, or individually -- what would they show for national political news/debate?

Conversely, suppose (to take a rather silly, but I think illustrative example), every young person were going to be forced to go to the same college or university, to be determined by national vote. Why, every person in the country would be glued to the TV for weeks!

In short, debates assuming national level mandates/conflicts mean good tv for their national audiences.

Just a couple guesses.

Could it be a coincidence that the man with the most support from active duty military personel, supported by thousands of small donations that have added up to millions, and not afraid to confront the status quo, has been effectively muzzled by what has been passing as a free and open society? His supporters vilified for honestly casting online ballots. I don't agrea with all of Ron Paul's policies. I still have questions about a number of them. But we must wake up as a nation and cast off an ever growing government, ever growing debts, and never ending wars. He seems to be the one candidate that understands how far we have strayed from the hopes of the founding fathers. What kept these men awake at night, and no doubt their wives also, was how to keep the government from becoming too large and too powerful. Several spoke of the power wielded by those who control a nations money supply.

Let cooler heads prevail. Our gift to Iran was the Shaw, who controlled the country with an iron fist. A revolt was innevitable. That is why it's so difficult to play in nation building and foreign entanglements. The law of unintended consequences continually changes the game.

We need to return to a Republic that has respect for the idea of limited government. We need not become an empire.

Does the media feel itself losing it's grip?

Hey everybody, did you know that Ahmadinejad NEVER said he intended to wipe Israel off the map? He never said that, but the US "media" claimed he did.

Where are those weapons of mass destruction in Iraq everybody? Wasn't our mission in Iraq to disarm Hussein - what's the mission now?

Wasn't our mission in Afghanistan to find or otherwise bring to justice binLaden - what is the mission there now?

Hey - do any of you have any idea how much money was spent on TARP, QE1 and QE2?

Isn't it odd that nobody in these giant banking firms have been prosecuted? Isn't that odd?

We don't have a media - we have what the USSR dreamed up, a very effective propaganda machine that people believe informs them. This is what Pravda would have been if it was made with capitalism.

Dr. Paul won this debate hands down in the 90 seconds he was allowed with his principled answer “Torture is illegal … waterboarding is torture. It’s illegal under international law and under our law. It’s also immoral" After the other candidates all endorsed torture. That answer alone shows Dr. Paul has more integrity in his pinky toe than the other four combined.

Hold on to your wallets. The Fed is going to implement yet another QE3. If we think inflation is bad now, just wait. Food prices are rising, gas prices are rising, they want to tax us more, our dollar value is dropping, our deficit equals our GDP, the government won't decrease spending NOW, and we are about to be downgraded again. Were any of these important topics touched upon in these debates?

The American voters must do their own research on their presidential candidates and not rely on the controlled media for their information. We don't need another four years of Obama who can put in place two more U.S. Supreme Justices for life who will not follow the Constitution and affect our laws for decades to come.

Just stop watching CBS. Like any other corporate interest, they are just a business who are reliant on our support for their survival. STOP WATCHING IT!
Even better, create your own campaign and vilify their status quo and bias strategies.
The power to control the minds of people is an important responsibility that the news agencies should pride themselves in having. In a free society, free speech can only prosper if its initial intent of giving tbe people a choice is being honored. Sadly, i cant say that this is the case.

Someone once told me that the world is what you make of it. Be positive in your campaign for the truth. a candle looses nothing by lighting another candle.
Speak the truth! Be positive in your approach. Hearts will open.

The FCC is directed by five Commissioners appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate for 5-year terms, except when filling an unexpired term. The President designates one of the Commissioners to serve as Chairperson. Only three Commissioners may be members of the same political party. None of them can have a financial interest in any Commission-related business.

I don't know if President Paul could abolish the FCC or not. Clearly he can designate one of the Commissioners to serve as Chairperson.
http://transition.fcc.gov/aboutus.html
http://techliberation.com/2009/01/08/abolish-the-fcc/

Its commissioners are meant to be "expert" and "independent," and are now openly embracing the political role they play. Commissioners issue press releases touting their own personal policies. And lobbyists spend years getting close to members of this junior varsity Congress.

Think about the storm around former FCC Chairman Michael Powell's decision to relax media ownership rules, giving a green light to the concentration of newspapers and television stations into fewer and fewer hands. This is policy by committee, influenced by money and power, and with no one, not even the President, responsible for its failures.

The bottom line is that President Ron Paul is a threat to the media monopoly.

Can you imagine television in the free market?

The American main stream media and their FCC can.

And they don't like that idea. Not one bit.

Come on they gave Ron Paul a minute in a half in the first hour. Romney, Gingrich, and Cain their choosen ones usually get the most amount of free media coverage time allotted to them. Ron Paul supporters give to the money bomb and make a difference. I would like to see a front page article in the Wall Street Journal or someother influential paper a positive article on Ron Paul. Ron Paul is polling much higher than several others who got much more time at the debate. The debate was sponsored by Heritage and AEI sponsored themselves by the military industry and the Kochs, neither of whom are keen on Ron Paul becoming president or airing Ron Paul's views, either. And it isn't because Americans would laugh at those views that they are concerned. Ron Paul is an alternative to rampant erosion of our civil rights and destruction of our Constitution.

I realize now, I was manipulated in school also.
The days of people being lead by the choice few are coming to an end. It may not happen this election, hopefully one day.
Had it not been for the internet, I would still be a drone.
Its very disheartening to watch these debates, read newspapers, watch the TV News and see any candidate shunned. Its unfair and immoral. The media is full of liars!

Newt Gingrich? Are you F-ing kidding me? That guy has less votes than a bum on the street and now all of a sudden he is second? BULLSH*T! Let's see, Romney is falling so that leaves (in reality) Ron Paul as the frontrunner, but we won't put that in the media. So we pick Perry for second and Paul for third. Perry then messes up and falls apart and (in reality) Paul should be second if not first. But nope. Hey look everyone, here comes Cain out of nowhere and he is second and Paul is still third. Now Cain is falling apart and (in reality) Paul, should be second if not first again. But nope again! Out of nowhere, miraculously, Gingrich who can't even pull double digit numbers is all of a sudden in second and Paul is in third still. Well I don't know about the rest of you, but when a person is in third place that many times, and the second place man drops that many times, that eventually down the road puts the third person in second and so forth. WHOOPS!! Did I say RON PAUL??? NO that's right, HE CAN'T WIN according to the media so we just omit him as if he doesn't exist. Are people not getting this yet? Ron Paul is practically the frontrunner and the media is feeding everyone lies and propaganda. When Newt screws up then who will be next in line to throw on second place instead of Paul, BACHMANN? HUNTSMAN? SANTORUM? JOE THE PLUMBER?

Reply

FreeAmericaNow

Also, with only 89 seconds of air time, it makes you wonder that the globalists were doing it so they can give more time to buildup their new frontrunner, Gingrich since they needed someone else since Perry and Cain are going downhill. Now that they have a platform to build on, they probably will go back to giving Paul his privileged 4 whole minutes of speaking debate time during the next debate. This all definitely seems planned to wedge someone in between Romney and Paul as always. Next will be Huntsman or Santorum when Newt falls like he did before. Just tell everyone that he created and supported NAFTA. That alone will kill any chances he has of getting elected if exploited the correct way like Perry and Cain.

Why is everybody furious *NOW*?? Debates have been rigged from day one? Buddy Roemer, who is pushing for Campaign Finance Reform (which would eliminate the need for network sponsored debates in lieu of publicly-funded PSA's) hasn't been invited to a single debate, even when he meets minimum requirements. Is it really shocking that the networks have shut him out? Why didn't the Paul and Bachmann teams cry "unfair" in the last NINE debates when Buddy Roemer was shut out. They were happy to play in the rigged game, until the tables were turned on them. Don't cry for me, Argentina.

Correction: The Paul campaign complained that Paul was afforded only 1.5 minutes in the TELEVISED portion of the 90-minute debate. During the online-only portion (the final 30 minutes) Paul got several more questions. Presumably far more viewers watched on TV than via live feed so the skimpy time allotment in the first hour was seriously damaging to the Paul campaign.

CBS gave Ron Paul only 90 seconds of air time in the debate. Ron Paul has double digits in the polls (comes in third in most), Ron Paul has raised the third most money; Ron Paul receives more donations from active duty military than all the other Republican candidates combined and Obama individually. Ron Paul has a national campaign organization. The Media is trying to manipulate the outcome of the Republican Primary it is obvious. Newt wasn't crying out for the audit of the Federal Reserve when he was Speaker of the House. Especially when Republican candidates who don't even get 1% in the polls and can't raise money to run for President are given more time and treated like top tier candidates. Ron Paul represents a change beyond what all the other Republicans offer and Obama.

There are no real differences between the rest of Republican candidates and Obama; They only argue about: How much we WILL be TAXED; What they WILL SPEND money on; How much money we WILL give to foreign nations; How fast we WILL create MORE government and HOW and WHERE we WILL POLICE the world and FIGHT MORE WARS in order to KILL more of our men and women in uniform.

Ron Paul argues should we do these things and his answer is NO. Stop the status quo and the media/government from deciding who wins and loses...Vote Ron Paul for President in 2012 so we all get a shot at winning.

Ron Paul should state (or at least paraphrase) the following:

If nation “A” deliberately attacks nation “B” with nation “A’s” armed forces, that is a belligerent act of war. (Unless, of course, it was the USA doing the attacking, then it is to be considered a “Kinetic Action”.)

If nation “A” deliberately sends its agents to nation “B” to kill the citizens of nation “B”, that is considered a belligerent act of war. (Unless, of course, it was the USA doing the sending, then it is to be considered “Targeted Assassinations”.)

If nation “A” deliberately attempts to topple the government of nation “B” because nation “A’s” leaders think that nation “B’s” leaders pose a threat to the interests of nation “A”, then that is a belligerent act of war. (Unless, of course, it was the USA doing the toppling, then it is to be considered “Good Politics”.)

How would WE feel about being nation “B”? A tad angry, perhaps?

As one who supported Congressman (Dr.) Paul through actual campaigning, finances and precinct meetings (for many years), I have great respect for him and the principles he stands on, however, my dilemma is indeed electability. I'm not a conspiracy theory purist so I don't ascribe to a belief that last election's primary was rigged against him since most of the people who voted told me they did not vote for him because they thought he was too libertarian. If he is really that popular as the straw poles would indicate, he would be showing an equal proportion in the more trustworthy pollsters but he honestly is not. I also know, because I really know, that you can have such an effective organization that can "show up" at straw pole voting in bus loads and impact the vote. I think most every Republican would vote for him if he won the primary and even some libertarian independents and democrats would support him but when only 7-9% of the electorate (from the honest, trustworthy pollsters) really want him for President, then we have to consider a next best choice that more of the electorate would favor.

Bill, polls show Paul and Romney do the best of any candidates vs. Obama -- and Paul crushes Obama among independents (which are key to winning a general) by 10 points, while Romney loses by 3.

Ron absolutely has broad appeal -- but a lot of it is among liberty minded independents, anti-war democrats, etc. His greatest challenge is the primary. If he wins the primary, he'll win the white house, no question in my view.

One more! I have never been this involved, donate to Dr. Paul and work on the effort. I just woke up from a very long sleep.

Can someone please list the sponsors of the debate, I too wish to boycott anyone that had anything to do with the so called debate on CBS on 11/12/11.

There's two ways to play a game...play to be the first to win...or play to be the last to lose.

At the risk of being the media defending the media, I would like to point out that Patch is working hard to bring you first-hand interviews with all the candidates, and even create time and space for voters to meet and talk with them. So far we've hosted Fred Karger and Buddy Roemer at The Draft in Concord for an informal Q&A. Coming this week at The Draft: Gary Johnson, 4 p.m. on Thursday Nov. 17; and Ron Paul for a special lunchtime appearance Nov. 22 at noon. We hope you will all join us.

All media is not the same, that's for sure. There's a big difference between
1: trying to share information and create a community dialogue, and
2: trying to push public opinion in a certain direction by using prejudicial language, and amplifying certain voices while muting others.

Nashua Patch, I feel, does the former. Most major tv and radio networks do the latter.

They most certainly do not. Where are the Democratic bloggers? As far as I can tell, I can only name three people on this board that are, and zero of them have the Pblog ability.

ForThePeople,

On my site (Hampton-North Hampton), I have three regular Democratic bloggers. We definitely invite all viewpoints, and like Carol, I would encourage anyone interested in blogging or increasing the variety of Patch bloggers to speak with their local Patch editor if they feel a particular side of any conversation is missing.

The FCC needs to get involved and lay the appropriate sanctions and fines down on CBS for their violation of FCC's equal-time rule regarding political candidates. CBS has violated the public trust and airwaves with this blatant partisanship. The sheer complacency and lack of public outcry for this only underscores how bad things have gotten in the last fifty years. CBS's advertisers would have been boycotted in the past. It's not CBS's job to play into trends and tell the American people what they should and should not be hearing. Shame on you CBS. And shame on the FCC. And shame on the American public. You'll get exactly what you tollerate.
