Report: Bettencourt Faked Internship Reports

NH lawmaker claims House Majority Leader falsified work to get law degree.

The New Hampshire Union Leader reports that state Rep. J. Brandon Giuda claims House Majority Leader D.J. Bettencourt falsified internship reports to the University of New Hampshire School of Law.

Bettencourt announced Friday he would resign, effective June 6, because of his new job as executive director of the New Hampshire Legal Rights Foundation. But Giuda, R-Chichester, alleges it was related to false internship reports. Bettencourt was interning, at least in part, through Giuda's law practice. Read about it on the New Hampshire Union Leader website.

In an interview with Patch on Friday, Bettencourt said he will be the spokesman for the NHLRF and will be fundraising on their behalf. This caused the potential for conflict of interest, which he said was a motivating factor in his resignation.

Former U.S. Senator Alan Simpson (R-Wyoming) said it best, "If you have integrity, nothing else matters. If you don't have integrity, nothing else matters."

"The Boston Globe today has a story that states that Harvard may have violated federal guidelines in the reporting of diversity information because of what Elizabeth Warren told them," Senator Brown said in a statement released by his campaign. "I call on Harvard President Faust to immediately correct the record with the relevant federal agencies and uphold Harvard's 400-year-old tradition of abiding by the truth."

ForThePeople, just seemed to reflect a behavior that has become so prevalent. It is on both side of the isle. There will be plenty of people throwing stones at this. I don't have to spend any more time addressing my disappointment in another political failure.

Channel 9 is reporting falsified documents. I bet the story gets even stickier.

The interesting part about all of this is this administration standing up at the front of the chamber and pretending that they have some kind of moral ground to take away the rights from everyone else; that they have the right to destroy New Hampshire's safety net, eliminate union rights, abolish the minimum wage, ensure that only the wealthy get healthcare, object to gay marriage on "moral" (religious) grounds, and that they are so distraught about fraud.

I'm making popcorn for this one. Couldn't have happened to a better guy... maybe with the exception of the speaker.

Come on the story just broke. It is sad that a young adult takes on more than they can handle and finds it necessary to cut corners. Maybe after decades of government there was a reason someone so young did not have the responsibility of "Majority Leader."

@Patriot " It is sad that a young adult takes on more than they can handle and finds it necessary to cut corners." I would think after many years of being in Concord he would have enough common sense to think before making such a drastic decision to " cut corners" more like cheating on an exam at college level which the consciences are more severe than a slap on the wrist. He should step immediately from the House of Reps as well as the Economic Committee in Salem. I hope no more comes of this but I am reluctant to think this is the end..more to come.

No comment from Patrick or underwater couple? Loss for words? I also feel bad for his family. His dad a good guy always at 150% support of his son always out there rallying for his election.
