Police: Woman Stole Machete, Other Items

Sara Rivera took pills, threatened police with Taser before her arrest at the Salem Walmart this morning.

A Haverhill, Mass., woman was arrested early Wednesday after she allegedly stole numerous items from Walmart in Salem, including a machete.

According to Salem Police, Sara Rivera, 28, was combative with police and threatened them with a Taser before being charged with willful concealment.

Police responded to Walmart at about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday for a report from store loss prevention regarding a "combative female shoplifter."

Police said loss prevention reported Rivera "swallowed a handful of unknown pills," later determined to be 10 to 15 Xanax pills, while they were trying to detain her.

Salem Fire was notified and they also responded, police said.

When officers arrived on scene, police said Rivera was "standing in the parking lot with her arms outstretched incessantly blowing an airhorn."

Police said she refused to cooperate and was taken into custody after a brief struggle, during which she threatened to Taser officers. Indeed, police said Rivera had a Taser "tucked into her wasteband."

In addition to the machete, Rivera is alleged to have stolen horror movies, perfumes and other items. The total dollar amount of the theft was around $1,000, according to police.

According to police, Rivera was treated by Salem Fire, taken to police headquarters for processing and then taken to Parkland Medical Center in Derry to be "medically cleared for incarceration."

From there, police said Rivera was transported to Rockingham County jail pending arraignment in the 10th Circuit Court of Salem.
