Serious Injury to One in I-93 Rollover Crash

Three people transported to Lawrence General in crash at 11:45 p.m. Friday.

UPDATE, SUNDAY: The Union Leader reported late Saturday that the injuries sustained by the three occupants of the truck were serious but not life-treatening.

UPDATE, 10:15 a.m.: Salem Fire Captain Stephane Cattin said the rollover accident caused "very serious" injuries to one passenger who was eventually transfered to a Boston hospital.

Cattin said the accident was initially called in at 11:45 p.m. Friday. A pickup truck had impacted the center median guardrail, rolled over an undetermined number of times and landed on its wheels in the median, causing "tremendous" damage to the pickup.

According to Cattin the pickup had three occupants, one of which appeared to have been ejected from the vehicle while a passenger was entraped.

"It required an extensive extracation of about 25 to 30 minutes to remove the passenger," Cattin said.

Cattin said all three occupants were transported to Lawrence General Hospital and added that the entraped individual who suffered "very serious" injuries was eventually transfered to a Boston hospital although Cattin did not know which hospital the patient had been taken to.

Cattin said all of Salem Fire's resources were on scene of the crash as well as Salem Police and N.H. State Police. State Police are handling the investigation, Cattin said.

EARLIER STORY, 8:29 a.m.: Emergency crews responded to a serious motor vehicle accident with injury overnight on Interstate 93 in Salem near Exit 1.

Police and fire were called to the scene at 12:04 a.m. Saturday for an overturned vehicle with entrapment on I-93 northbound just south of Exit 1, according to emergency radio broadcasts. Three people were reportedly in the vehicle, and one was pinned inside.

Multiple ambulances were called to the scene, and a MedFlight helicopter was initially called for but couldn't fly due to poor weather conditions. At least one patient was reportedly transported from the scene to Lawrence General Hospital.
