Man Charged in Beagle Cruelty Case

Police confirm John Kalamaras was arrested this week for numerous counts of animal cruelty.

A local man turned himself in to Salem Police Tuesday on numerous animal cruelty charges stemming from

Deputy Salem Police Chief Shawn Patten confirmed that John Kalamaras, 57, of Haverhill Road was arrested this week in connection to the incident.

Police seized the 22 beagles March 16 after they were found , covered in their own feces and urine, with no access to water.

According to the police log, Kalamaras turned himself in Tuesday at 11:20 a.m. and was released on a summons.

The log lists 15 cruelty to animals charges against Kalamaras, with five each related to care, shelter and sustenance.

A clerk at the 10th Circuit Court of Salem did not have information about a future court date for Kalamaras.

The 22 beagles were taken to , which later reported all of by the end of March.
