Lynch Opposes Casino Legislation in Address

Continues to promise the veto of expanded gambling in New Hampshire.

Gov. John Lynch gave at the State House in Concord today and took the opportunity to reiterate his opposition to any legislation that would bring casino gambling to the Granite State.

Here are his comments on the issue from the full text of his speech:

As lawmakers, we have a responsibility to think of the long-term consequences of our actions, that is why I oppose expanded gambling.

New Hampshire has developed a brand that has led to our economic success.

I do not believe that the monetary benefits of expanded gambling outweigh the risks that it poses to New Hampshire's quality of life, our existing businesses and workers, and our economic future. That is why I will veto legislation allowing casinos in New Hampshire.

Lynch made similar points late in 2011 when bring casino gambling to New Hampshire.

, which would legalize casino gambling and bring the possibility of two licensing to locations in New Hampshire, is expected to be voted on by the full House next week.

Salem's is widely expected to be a candidate for the first of the two licenses. Millennium Gaming has an option to purchase Rockingham Park and develop it into a casino should legislation pass.

suggested the state would see $53 million in revenues from expanded gaming even with casinos and Massachusetts and expected social costs.

The Telegraph of Nashua reported Sunday that a possible $500 million expansion of Rockingham Park would create more than 2,000 jobs and bring in more than $140 million to the state annually.
