According to her website, Hassan was first elected to the state Senate in 2004 and served a total of six years. During that time she served as President Pro Tempore and Majority Leader. In 1999 she served as an advocate on the Advisory Committee to the Adequacy in Education and Finance Commission under then-Gov. Jeanne Shaheen.

Hassan works as an attorney and earned her B.A. from Brown University and a J.D. from the Northeastern School of Law. She lives in Exeter with her husband and two children.
