Clinton 'Preaching to the Saved' for Hassan [VIDEO]

The former President was equal parts forthright and folksy as he made the case for Hassan for governor.

Maggie Hassan's people were hoping their candidate could gain some traction by having Bill Clinton fill the ballroom at the Radisson Hotel with supporters.

They were half right.

Although Clinton only managed to fill the ballroom to about half its 700 capacity, many of those who did come out to hear their favorite former U.S. president went away with a new resolve to support Hassan for governor.

“I came to hear Bill Clinton, not to hear Maggie. However having done that, I will definitely vote for Maggie,” said Suze Scholl of Nashua.

Her friend, Diane Blake of Londonderry, said she, too, will be voting for Hassan.

“I didn't know much about Maggie before, but I will be voting for her, now,” said Diane Blake, of Londonderry, following the hour-long event at the Radisson.

Clinton spoke of Hassan's effective leadership and "true grit" while serving in the New Hampshire Senate.

"I know I'm preaching to the saved here," Clinton said. "But it's important you go out and talk about her record in the senate."

He also spent a good deal of time running down some of the state's more notorious lapses under the current Republican leadership.

"They've cut education so they could cut the cigarette tax? What's that, smoke more, learn less?" said Clinton.

He said the pervasive political "winner takes all" attitude does not serve New Hampshire, or the country.

"Everywhere in the country, whether you're talking about a presidential election or a governor's race, there are usually two huge questions: Who's more likely to get us back to full employment," Clinton said, "...and what kind of people are we anyway? Are we going back to our motto, 'out of many one,' E pluribus unum, do we believe that the founders of this country pledged their lives, their fortune, their sacred honor to form a more perfect union? Or do we really want to go through this 'winner take all, you're on your own, the government is the devil incarnate' direction that the Tea Party/Republican party is taking?"

Before things got rolling, Judy Arnold and Charles Payne of Derry arrived early enough to get a pretty good spot in front of the stage. They were surprised the room wasn't more full – not just because of Clinton, but because this gubernatorial race is pivotal, they said.

"I think it's been one of the quietest races ever," Payne said.

Arnold agreed, saying she's spoken to some people who don't even realize there's a governor's race going on.

"It's making me a little nervous to hear people say, 'Governor of what?' when I mention Maggie is running for governor," Arnold said.

Both Arnold and Payne said they are already dedicated Hassan supporters, and hoped Clinton's endorsement might "wake up" voters to pay attention to the race, and the major issues that are riding on this election.

Clinton underscored that point in his remarks, saying that he hoped voters would pay attention to Hassan's message, and compare her stance on the issues with those of her opponents.

Hassan will face off against fellow Democrats Jackie Cilley and Bill Kennedy in the primary for a shot at whoever wins the GOP primary, Kevin Smith or Ovide Lamontagne.

Last night, Smith released a statement in anticipation of Clinton's arrival, and endorsement of Hassan.

"It doesn't matter who campaigns for Maggie Hassan, it won't change the fact that she raised taxes on small businesses, authored a government takeover of health care, and doesn't have a plan to grow our economy. Whether it's Maggie, John Lynch, or Ovide Lamontagne, endorsements matter little if you can't back them up with the solutions and plan for making New Hampshire more economically competitive and creating new jobs. Voters want leadership and they want results," Smith said.

Clinton poked holes in the GOP's record of leadership throughout his remarks, touching on the resulting erosion to public education, medicare and healthcare systems on their watch.

"I feel a little bad for the Tea Party in Congress; their approval rating is only at 18 percent," said Clinton.

"Thing is, they've done what they said they would do in 2010, but nobody paid attention – politicians are more honest than you think they are," Clinton said. "I know Maggie will do what she says she's going to do. She won't give you miracles, but she will give you progress... she won't drive a wedge through the heart of New Hampshire. She will lead you, and you will be proud."

That particular part of Clinton's remarks resonated with Diane Blake.

"I liked that he said, 'Gee whiz, you get what you vote for.' Because people weren't listening to them during the last election, and they're doing in Concord exactly what they said they were going to do – as Bill said, 'smoke more and learn less,' and that's not the state I know."

Also in attendance was former Nashua Alderman Carl Andrade, who said he's met Hassan before, but it was Bill Clinton that drew him out to the event – even though he's met the President several times before, over the years.

“I'm back because I'm like so many people, who wish he was our president for life,” Andrade said.

Bill Clinton balanced the budget and was not a bad president. Bill Clinton, however worked to lift certain equity trading regulations put in place to prevent the pilfering of the market. These seeds he planted, I believe contributed substantially to the 2008 financial catastrophe. I guess they all do something stupid sooner or later. Too much power and influence pulling their strings.

Yeah, they (Prez, and Congress) took/stole social security funds and balanced the budget, amazing. Peace? 9/11 happened directly after Clinton left office, the seat wasn't even cold. Bush and Cheney may have never happened if Clinton would of kept it zipped up. Are these the wonderful things we are talking about?

@Not this Time -

1) Social Security was untouched during the Clinton administration, currently has a SURPLUS of $270 BILLION, and can met all its obligations for the next 25 and 75% of all obligations thereafter, in perpetuity, with NO CHANGES in law. Those "I.O.U.'s" Bush flashed when he claimed that Soc. Sec. was bankrupt are called US Treasury Bills, which also comprise most of the trust fund his parents still hold for him, and are currently accepted as the most stable investment in the WORLD!

2) Remember a document left for Dubya's administration, by Clinton's, called "Bin Laden Determined to Launch Attack Within the United States", which was COMPLETELY IGNORED until 9/11?

Got TRUTH?

Look up credit default swaps (under Clinton) by the way, rubin, geitner, sommers.all billy boys peeps. Balanced the budget because of pub congress and a new industry pops while he's pres. (Microsoft, intel, Internet bubble. Ever heard of it) btw Enron was booming numbers when bil was pres, gwb takes over and we learn it's all garbage. Safety and security? Pakistan sells nukes to north Korea, Iran, and Libya during bills tenure. OBL is bombing the wtc for the first time, then bombs the cole, kohbar towers. Where's bill? Yup. He was a real winner. Oh then he himself sold sattelite technology to the Chinese then they 'contributed' to his museum..what a crock.

matsgerrlee:
In 2010 Social Security paid out more in benefits then it collected from payroll taxes. This is the first time this happened. The surplus you speak about is IOU's from Washington. Since Social Security needed to pay out more then they collected the Social Security administration cashed in some of the IOU's. Where does Washington get the money to pay the IOU's? They borrowed some from China and also printed more money. Remember the debt ceiling crisis last year and the call to raise the debt ceiling? Why? Washington needed to borrow more money to meets its obligations. One of those obligations is Social Security IOU's they have to start paying back. Remember President Obama said on Aug 4 last year; if the debt ceiling is not raised then people will not get their Social Security checks.

National debt increased from $4.4 trillion to $5.6 trillion during Clinton administration. The budget, deficit, was balanced because 1) Republicans in Congress shut down government unless a balanced budget was passed 2) the dot.com boom increased payroll taxes and 3) Clinton tax increase in early 90's. . Clinton also sent former President Carter to North Korea as an envoy, which resulted in giving North Korea nuclear powerplant that was suppose to be used for peaceful purposes only. North Korea then processed the spent fuel into plutonium and has worked with Iranians.
Sudan had Bin Laden and offered to turn him over to the US but Clinton turned the offer down. Clinton administration also implemented a policy preventing the CIA and FBI to share information.

However Maggie Hasson quickly rose to a leadership role in the NH Senate and has along list of accomplishments. Jackie Cilley appears to talk the talk, but has not walked the walk. Her track record is minimal.

Maggie Hasson has the skills to be an effective Governor. I urge the readers to vote for her in the Sept Primary.

Clinton also gutted the Commodities Exchange Act of 1936 the banned paper traders from bidding on oil futures by passing the commodities futures Modernization Act of 2000 which is the legislation that is responsible for the unregulated speculation in the commodities markets and the single contributing reason for why we are getting hammered at the gas pumps and the oil companies are raking in obscene profits..

We keep trying to anthropomorphise entities like banks, and trading houses, and corporations at our own peril. If anything these creatures are more like bacteria. Single purposed entities who will only take until they are controlled with antibiotics. Look at Wall Street, they backed President Barack Obama in the last election only as a hedge on the bet that he would win, now? Don't forget, this was at the same time they were piecing together the information obtained from a detainee about Bin Laden location. And, it was this information, that was collected during the Bush administration, that eventually led to Bin Laden.

All of the Democrat governors would be good choices, but Maggie is my least favorite of the three. She is more shrewd than the other two, knowing when to sit on the fence and also how not to aggravate tax sensitivities, but it's this very political wiliness that makes me not like her as much.

Kennedy needs to learn that his good ideas need to come out in more specificity after the election because those soundbites will be his downfall (also, he needs a friendly legislature to do any of that), but I surely appreciate his candid honesty, which gets my vote for now.

So, where was he...Washington or Houston?

We are responsible for who we elect and how they perform. If it is the President, Senators, Governors, or town Selectmen/women, we have only ourselves to blame. I am probably preaching to the choir here (no pun intended), but if we want good leaders we need to be informed voters and do our homework. In my opinion, our responsibility shouldn't end at the voting booth. We must continue to stay in touch with our elected leaders on what we want from them. You can write to them, call, or better yet meet with them personally when they hold local office hours in your town or city. The biggest problem in the United States as I see it, is lots of people complaining, but not stepping up to do there part-this would be at the very least getting out to vote! In my opinion if your not part of the solution-your part of the problem.

Both parties, with particular emphasis aimed at the Republican party, actively try to keep their constituents in the dark on many of things they are doing behind closed doors. So in that respect it's hard to really know everything they are doing no matter how much research you do but I do agree with you that if you are going to vote for someone then it is your responsibilty to vet that candidate properly and not just vote for the candidate just because they are in opposition to the other party. Though I have to admit I did vote for Clinton's wife because I wanted to see Rpenlicans tossed from Congress.

Mike Healey,
I don't know who introduced it but Tim Geithner was instrumental in drafting the bill as was the President's Working Group on Financial Markets who consisted of Larry Summers, Arthur Levitt and Greenspan.
Though Geithner was not part of the working group he was reported to have been intimately invlved in writing the bill.
The point is that Clinton was actively involved in selling us out to Wall St. energy speculators and had a hand in bringing the economy down. Now he did admit that he made a mistake on derivatives and that mea culpa might have stood had he not just recently come out in favor of building the Keystone XL pipeline that would have had the potential to pollute 2/3 rds of the U.S. fresh water if there was a spill.

amazing how so many people have all the answers and yet their contribution to society is telling us how much they know...or do not know.

And you're referring to who? If it's me I don't claim to have any answers but I do claim to have established facts about wealthy elitist politicians that have their hands in mine and your back pockets and have gotten a pass on their activities by the voting public. Now if you enjoy supporting these wealthy elitist poilticians at your own expense that's your perogative, I donhowever don't.

Maggie is a fine candidate but Jackie Cilley is the one for me. They are both outstanding women but Jackie Cilley refuses to take "the pledge". Maggie Hassan took the pledge and in my opinion, that's equivalent to making a pact with the devil in order to get elected. Take a look at Jackie Cilley's record --- you won't be disappointed. She will be a fabulous leader for this state and will work tirelessly for us all.
